“Odd movements from the Demon Lord’s Army?”
“Yes, Boss. From a scouting report. Scouts say there’s a good chance the enemy will invade within the next few days.”
“…I see. Thank you, Rose… Oh, also, you don’t have to refer to me as ‘Boss.’ You can go on calling me Miss Snow.”
Rose breaks out in a happy grin.
“…Understood, Miss Snow!”
…If I were as straightforward as she is… If I could deal with things more flexibly, could I have at least listened to what he had to say instead of just driving him away?
I shelve that bit of self-doubt and address my knights.
“Split into two groups for a training exercise. We’ll fight with the assumption that we’re facing the Demon Lord’s Elite Four.”
My loyal subordinates roar their enthusiasm and quickly begin organizing.
…This wasn’t how I wanted to come back to this unit…
I think back to the events that led to my reinstatement and can’t help but frown.
Once Six left, the chief of staff, convinced that it was my doing, happily signed the reinstatement papers putting me back in charge of the Royal Guard.
That’s not why I drove him off. I know I’m particularly attached to money and prestige, but I can’t feel happy about being reinstated this way.
…Not that this is a new revelation, but times like these are when I want to curse my own personality.
I guess my irritation is showing itself on my face again. Rose hesitates before she approaches me to speak.
“…Um, Miss Snow, there’s another report…”
“What is it? Good news? Bad news?”
I’m not certain I can stomach more bad news.
“I-I’m not actually sure… It’s um… Well, lately, it seems a pervert has been spotted creeping around at night.”
“…Oh, is that all? That’s a job for the town guard, isn’t it?” I reply.
Rose looks decidedly uneasy.
“The witnesses say the pervert wears a spiky suit of black armor…”
