From Gu Jiao’s vantage point, she could only see the side of his hood.

However, when she had first entered the stall, she had glimpsed his face beneath the brim of his hood.

He wore a half-face golden mask, and the lower half of his face was pale and clean-shaven.

There was an unusual aura about this man. Gu Jiao was almost immediately certain that he was a death warrior.

She also noticed the obsidian thumb ring on his left hand.

The man drank his tea in silence, left five knife coins on the table, grabbed the long sword beside him, and walked out of the stall.

Not long after he left, Gu Jiao also paid for her tea and buns, mounted Black Wind King, and departed.

Black Wind King had an exceptionally keen sense of smell and had undergone specialized training. When it came to tracking a person’s scent, he was no less capable than the legendary warhorses.

However, the man was a skilled expert, so Gu Jiao deliberately kept her distance so as not to alert him to her presence.

Yet, shortly after passing through the northern inner city gate, the man’s scent suddenly disappeared.

Black Wind King sniffed the air carefully, but he could not determine which path the man had taken.

"What’s going on? Did he vanish into thin air? Or——"

Gu Jiao muttered under her breath, then suddenly realized something.

In one swift motion, she drew the red-tasseled spear from her back.

At that exact moment, a towering figure dropped from the sky, delivering a fierce kick to her spear.

She was knocked off her horse, but with a sharp twist, she planted the spearhead into the ground, using the momentum to flip herself upright, preventing an ungraceful fall.

With her spear firmly in hand, she turned to face the black-robed man now standing on the opposite side of the deserted street.

This alleyway was eerily quiet, with not a single other person in sight, only the two of them and the horse.

The man’s robe billowed slightly, and despite the summer heat, a chilling air spread through the surroundings, making the moment feel unnervingly cold.

"Black Wind King?" The black-robed man cast a glance at the horse beside Gu Jiao. Then, beneath his mask, his thin lips parted slightly. "So, you must be that Xiao Liulang."

"I am." Gu Jiao replied without a hint of fear. "Had I known you’d recognize me so quickly, I should have greeted you back at the tea stall, Lord An Hun."

Indeed, this man was none other than An Hun, Imperial Noble Consort Han’s top expert!

"You actually know who I am. Looks like that bastard from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall has been feeding you plenty of information about me." The black-robed man slowly stepped toward Gu Jiao. His pace was unhurried, yet every step radiated an ominous killing intent. "I didn’t come out of the city today for you, but since you’ve delivered yourself to me, I suppose I’ll just have to take your life."

Gu Jiao said calmly, "That’s not up to you."

The black-robed man let out a faint chuckle. "Such arrogance for someone so young."

Gu Jiao replied flatly, "And you—so ugly, yet so full of yourself."

"Sharp-tongued." The black-robed man smiled, and in the next instant, he launched a sudden attack on Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao felt an overwhelming surge of internal force crashing down upon her body. Before she could break free from its grip, the black-robed man’s figure flickered, and in the blink of an eye, he appeared right in front of her, striking directly at her chest with a powerful palm!

Gu Jiao raised her red-tasseled spear to block the attack, but the sheer force of the strike still sent her flying backward.

Black Wind King galloped forward, attempting to catch her, but the black-robed man had no intention of letting Gu Jiao land safely.

With lightning speed, he lunged forward and struck her again, sending her airborne. Then, leaping into the air himself, he aimed a devastating stomp straight at Gu Jiao’s abdomen!

If this kick landed squarely, it would rupture her internal organs, killing her instantly on the spot!

At the critical moment, a figure clad in gray and white flashed through the air, streaking past beneath the black-robed man’s foot.

In a swift, precise movement, he caught Gu Jiao and landed on one knee at the side of the street.

Wasting no time in battle, he carried Gu Jiao onto Black Wind King’s back, mounted the horse, and urged it forward at full speed, dashing through the alleyways and heading straight for a more crowded area.

Gu Jiao coughed violently, spitting out mouthfuls of blood, staining half of Liao Chen’s sleeve.

Liao Chen wrapped one arm around her while gripping the reins tightly with the other.

Only after racing across three full streets did he finally rein in Black Wind King, bringing the horse to a halt.

There was no one around. Liao Chen dismounted, and without his support, Gu Jiao slumped weakly onto the horse’s back.

She had already coughed up all the blood she could. Now, she was simply exhausted.

Liao Chen took her pulse. He wasn’t a physician, but as a martial artist, he was highly sensitive to irregularities in one’s internal condition.

“You’re… fine?” Liao Chen was surprised.

That wasn’t entirely accurate; his definition of "fine" meant there was no need to start preparing funeral arrangements.

Still, he was astonished. Was this girl really that tough?

She took two direct hits from An Hun and only spat out some blood?

“I’m just that strong. Humph.” Gu Jiao lay sprawled on Black Wind King’s back, her voice feeble.

Sure, surviving two strikes from An Hun was impressive, but hearing her say it made it sound utterly unbelievable.

Liao Chen’s gaze fell on her armor and battle robe. The fiery-red robe reminded him of a cloak he had once seen, though he couldn’t quite recall its purpose.

But the texture of this armor——

He reached out and touched the armor on Gu Jiao’s back. “This is—”

Gu Jiao interrupted, “Hey, hasn’t anyone ever told you not to touch a girl without permission?”

——And just like that, the moment was ruined.

Whatever emotion had surfaced in Liao Chen’s eyes instantly vanished. He looked at Gu Jiao in exasperation. “Oh, so you do remember you’re a girl? Then what were you thinking, going head-to-head with An Hun? Are you insane?”

“He was the one who attacked me. I was just following him.” Gu Jiao stated matter-of-factly.

She did want to kill An Hun, but not without preparation.

She and Black Wind King had already been careful, yet An Hun’s vigilance exceeded expectations.

That said, she had been lucky this time. Her armor had saved her life. If not for it, she would have died at An Hun’s hands.

This wasn’t ordinary black iron armor. Some other material had been added, making it not only incredibly tough but capable of withstanding attacks from a master expert like An Hun.

“I’m coughing up blood, but it’s perfectly intact.” Gu Jiao stroked her armor.

Liao Chen shot her a speechless look. This girl sure looked oddly proud, did she even realize she had just crawled back from the gates of hell?

Forget it. If she didn’t have this kind of reckless drive, she wouldn’t have accomplished half of what she had so far.

Liao Chen said, “He underestimated you too. He didn’t use his full strength at all.”

So it wasn’t just Gu Jiao’s misjudgment.

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don’t abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
