For An Hun, failing to kill Gu Jiao after two consecutive strikes was already considered a mistake.
Gu Jiao sprawled on Black Wind King’s back like a limp frog, saying, “You wouldn’t be able to beat him either, would you?”
Liao Chen straightened his expression and said solemnly, “Of course not! This monk possesses boundless power. Dealing with a mere death warrior is easy. I only took you away because I was worried you’d die before the fight was over. But looking at you now, I suppose that was unnecessary.”
Gu Jiao: “Oh.”
Liao Chen: What kind of tone is that?
Gu Jiao added, “Then what if you teamed up with Taoist Qingfeng?”
Liao Chen replied, “He would never agree. He’d probably team up with An Hun to kill me first.”
Gu Jiao pondered for a moment before speaking again, "There’s something I’ve been curious about for a long time. Just what exactly did you do to Taoist Qingfeng? Did you steal his wife, or did you dig up his ancestors’ graves? Why is he so determined to kill you?"
Liao Chen removed the wine flask from his robes, pulled out the stopper, and took a swig before saying, "Grown-up matters. Kids shouldn’t ask."
“Oh, grown-up matters.” Gu Jiao lay flat, her cheeks squished into little puffy lumps, yet she still made a deliberate effort to raise her brows in a pretentious, knowing manner. The sight was almost unbearable to look at.
Liao Chen took another drink, fell silent for a long while, then gazed at the moon. “It’s not that I can’t beat An Hun. I just can’t kill him.”
There was only one person in the world who could.
That person was Shi Tian.
Unfortunately, Shi Tian had gone missing during a mission, vanishing without a trace ever since. The likelihood of survival was slim, he was most likely already dead.
Gu Jiao suddenly spoke up, "Speaking of which, why did you appear so suddenly? You’re not just passing by this time, are you? Monk, have you been following me? Let me tell you, stalking girls is wrong! Where I come from, creeps like you who stalk people get beaten up really badly..."
Her voice grew softer and more sluggish until she finally trailed off.
Liao Chen turned his head and saw that Gu Jiao had already fallen asleep, utterly exhausted.
She had incredible vitality and an unyielding will, but she wasn’t made of steel; she could still be hurt, feel pain, and grow weary.
Ever since she arrived in the State of Yan, she hadn’t had a single peaceful day.
The alley fell into complete silence.
Liao Chen looked at the armor she wore and murmured, “Why is this armor on you? Did Duke An give it to you? How did you become his adopted child? And why would he give you something this important?”
His gaze fell on her small, squished face, drooling in her sleep. Unable to resist, he asked, “Just who are you?”
Night had fallen.
The Black Wind King quietly moved to a breezy spot, letting Gu Jiao sleep in the cool night air.
Liao Chen walked over, stroking the Black Wind King’s head. “You don’t remember me, do you?”
The Black Wind King looked at him, its eyes carrying a hint of confusion.
Liao Chen gently patted its head and said, “Makes sense. You’ve never seen what I look like, but I’ve seen you. I was there when you were born.”
The Black Wind King began sniffing Liao Chen, searching for a familiar scent. It wasn’t a scent it recognized, but it wasn’t entirely foreign either—it didn’t make it feel repulsed.
Liao Chen remained still, allowing the Black Wind King to search his body for traces of the Xuanyuan Family’s scent.
But it likely wouldn’t find any.
The Black Wind King sniffed for a long time. Its emotions were not as complex as those of humans, yet after taking in Liao Chen’s scent, it inexplicably felt a trace of melancholy and disappointment.
Liao Chen extended a hand adorned with prayer beads, gently placing it on the horse’s forehead. In a soft voice, he said, “It’s alright... it’s alright.”
……
Princess Mansion.
It had rained last night, but today, the skies had cleared after the rain, leaving the air fresh with the scent of damp earth and greenery.
Princess Xinyang and Yu Jin sat inside, sorting through old clothes from Xiao Heng’s childhood.
The soft bed was covered with children’s garments. Yu Jin and Princess Xinyang sat at opposite ends of the bed.
Yu Jin picked up a neatly washed piece of old cotton cloth and chuckled, “This was Little Marquis’s diaper when he was a baby. You really kept everything. Not a single piece thrown away.”
Princess Xinyang couldn’t help but smile. “Why would I throw them away? The mansion is huge, and it’s not like we lack storage space.”
Yu Jin laughed. “You just couldn’t bear to part with them.”
Princess Xinyang picked up a bright red bellyband. “This was from when he was three months old. He grew so fast he outgrew it in half a month.”
Yu Jin recalled, “The weather was still cold back then. I remember he barely wore this bellyband.”
Princess Xinyang nodded. “It was just for looks. After his bath, I’d put it on him for a while, just to satisfy a mother’s wish to admire her child.”
“Poor Little Marquis.” Yu Jin chuckled, folding the bellyband and placing it in a box before picking up a set of soft pink clothes. “Little Marquis probably doesn’t know that when he was one, you dressed him up like a little girl.”
Princess Xinyang cleared her throat lightly. "It was just to indulge my curiosity for a moment."
Yu Jin carefully stored away the adorable little outfit before picking up a pair of tiger-head shoes, smiling as she said, "I made these myself."
Princess Xinyang pointed at a matching tiger-head hat and jacket on the bed. “You made these too—for Ah Heng’s first birthday.”
Yu Jin smiled. “The princess remembers everything.”
A gentle warmth filled Princess Xinyang’s eyes as she looked at the tiny shoes and clothes, exuding a soft maternal glow.
“I remember everything about Ah Heng.” She said.
Yu Jin remarked, “Speaking of Little Marquis’s first birthday, I remember when it came time for the ‘future-predicting’ ceremony, you wanted him to pick a book, and Lord Marquis wanted him to pick a sword. But in the end, he chose neither.”
At the mention of this, Princess Xinyang couldn’t help but chuckle helplessly. "That’s right. He grabbed Long Yi instead."
Princess Xinyang’s parenting philosophy was completely different from Shangguan Yan’s. Shangguan Yan followed the Xuanyuan Family’s tradition of raising children, practically letting Shangguan Qing grow up wild.
But because of her own terrible childhood experiences, Princess Xinyang was extremely cautious after having Xiao Heng, never letting him out of her sight for even a moment that she might as well have tied him to her waist.
Since Xiao Heng had never seen such a grand scene before his first birthday, he was terrified when suddenly surrounded by so many people. His parents didn’t help either as they were also among the crowd. He was so scared that he let out a pitiful cry for Long Yi.
And Long Yi appeared.
The little boy’s tiny hands clung tightly to Long Yi’s finger.
Princess Xinyang suddenly sighed. “Is Long Yi still the same?”
Yu Jin nodded solemnly. “Yes. Ever since you gave him that thing, he’s been sitting under the corridor in a daze every day.”
It all started when Princess Xinyang decided to sort through her old belongings. While going through an old jewelry box, she unexpectedly found a jade thumb ring covered in dust, forgotten for years.
This was something Long Yi had with him when he first arrived at the Princess Mansion. At some point, he had accidentally left it in Princess Xinyang’s room. She had originally intended to have Yu Jin return it to him, but she got distracted when preparations for her wedding suddenly intervened.

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don’t abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
