The restaurant Zhao Dengfeng owned was called Crane Tower.
It had quite a reputation in Qiushan Town, so it was easy to find the way there.
Gu Jiao was clad in battle armor, riding atop the imposing Black Wind King. Her entire bearing exuded the presence of a general, unmatched by anyone.
However, the birthmark on the left side of her face slightly marred the otherwise commanding image.
The waiter, upon seeing distinguished guests arrive, enthusiastically stepped out to greet them. "Honored customers, please come inside!"
Advisor Hu spoke up, "Is Zhao Dengfeng here? My Lord wishes to see him."
Seeing that the two were dressed in official attire, the waiter dared not offend them. He forced a smile and said hesitantly, "My boss... is not available to receive guests at the moment..."
"Boss Zhao~ Have another drink with me~"
"You’re not allowed to drink with her! If you must drink, drink with me instead!"
From a private room on the second floor came the flirtatious voices of women persuading someone to drink.
From the sound of it, there was more than one of them.
The waiter gave an awkward smile.
Advisor Hu’s face flushed red. He was both embarrassed and infuriated as he snapped, "In broad daylight, under the watchful heavens, how could such shameless debauchery take place? This is utterly disgraceful!"
With a loud clatter, the window lattice was suddenly pushed open.
A half-dressed beauty, clearly drunk, stumbled halfway out of the window. She leaned out so far that, for a moment, it seemed as if she might fall.
Her fragrant shoulders were exposed, her cheeks flushed, and her eyes hazy with intoxication. "Which shameless man said that… Hmm? Was it you… or…"
Her delicate, jade-like finger moved from pointing at Advisor Hu to Gu Jiao. Then, she let out a drunken giggle. "Oh my, what a handsome little general. Come, General, let me drink with you~"
Advisor Hu could no longer bear to look.
It would have been fine if he were alone, but standing beside his superior, the situation became overwhelmingly awkward.
Hurriedly, he turned away and covered his eyes.
Gu Jiao, however, remained calm, lifting her gaze toward the second floor.
She wasn’t looking at the woman, but beyond her.
The woman let out a coquettish humph. "Am I not beautiful? Who are you looking at?"
"Who dares say our Third Miss isn’t beautiful?"
Along with a teasing, slightly drunken voice, a burly man, also in a drunken stupor, appeared behind the beauty.
One of his arms leaned on the windowsill, while the other draped around the woman’s slender waist.
His gaze, bleary with intoxication, swept over the young figure below.
Naturally, he also took in the sight of the Black Wind King beneath the youth.
His eyes narrowed slightly before he let out a faint smile. "Oh? Which young master of the Han Family might this be? I don’t believe we’ve met."
Advisor Hu raised his head and rebuked sternly, "How audacious! This is Commander Xiao, the newly appointed leader of the Black Wind Cavalry! The adopted son of Duke An!"
"Oh?" The man appeared mildly surprised. "So the Black Wind Cavalry have changed hands once again. The Han Family really is quite incapable."
"Zhao Dengfeng." Gu Jiao looked at him with an unshaken calm. "Are you willing to return to the Black Wind Cavalry?"
Zhao Dengfeng chuckled and said, "Here, I eat well, drink well, and enjoy life to the fullest. Why would I go back to the Black Wind Cavalry? It’s nothing but hardship and exhaustion, and any day could be my last in battle. Why risk my life?"
Gu Jiao did not show anger, nor did she seem disappointed.
She simply gazed at him steadily, without blinking.
Her eyes were as pure as crystal, yet filled with unwavering determination.
Zhao Dengfeng felt a sharp sting in his gaze. His smile faded, and his voice turned cold. "If you’re here for a meal, it’s on the house. But if you have any other intentions, I suggest you leave. I, Zhao Dengfeng, have no desire to have anything to do with the Black Wind Cavalry for the rest of my life!"
With that, he slammed the window shut with a loud bang!
"Ah! You almost caught my fingers!"
The beauty’s complaint came from the second floor.
A small crowd had gathered to watch, with even the patrons upstairs and downstairs casting curious glances at Gu Jiao.
Advisor Hu coughed lightly and said, "My Lord, perhaps we should take our leave for now."
"Hmm." Gu Jiao nodded. "Big Boss, let’s go."
The Black Wind King turned and galloped toward the northern city gate.
Advisor Hu spurred his horse to catch up. "My Lord, this was quite an unlucky day for you."
Rejected three times in a single day, what a disaster.
"It doesn’t matter." Gu Jiao replied.
Advisor Hu was momentarily taken aback.
The young man’s expression remained calm. There was no sense of frustration, no trace of disappointment, nor any forced bravado.
Advisor Hu suddenly realized that the heart of the young man beside him was as still as a tranquil lake, undisturbed by ripples.
Despite his youth, his inner strength was astonishing.
Advisor Hu prided himself on his ability to read people, and he could count on one hand those who had reached such a state of mind.
And yet, this young man was still so young.
Advisor Hu asked, "My Lord, did you already anticipate that all three of them would refuse?"
"No." Gu Jiao replied.
Then your temperament is far more composed than most.
Advisor Hu still wanted to say something, but Gu Jiao suddenly tightened the reins and brought her horse to an abrupt halt.
Advisor Hu had no choice but to stop as well. Confused, he asked, "My Lord, what’s wrong?"
Gu Jiao turned her head, looking toward a dark-clad figure seated in a roadside tea stall. She then said to Advisor Hu, "You go back first. I won’t be returning to the barracks tonight."
"...Understood." Though Advisor Hu was puzzled, it was only his first day working under the new commander.
They weren’t close, and he dared not disobey the order.
With that, Advisor Hu spurred his horse toward the inner city.
Meanwhile, Gu Jiao rode Black Wind King to the tea stall.
She left Black Wind King outside and found a seat inside. Then, she said to the stall owner, "A bowl of cold tea and two steamed buns, please."
"Coming right up, honored guest!" The stall owner quickly placed two piping hot buns in a large bowl and served a bowl of cool tea to Gu Jiao.
Since this area was near a post station and a government office, it often saw officials and couriers passing through.
But the tea stall owner had little experience with the inner city elite and did not recognize the Black Wind Cavalry horses, so he assumed Gu Jiao was merely a government officer.
Gu Jiao picked up the tea bowl and silently took a sip.
She appeared to be drinking tea, but in reality, she was observing the man seated across from her.
It was a man cloaked in a hooded cape.

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don’t abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
