Six years ago, Nagisa
I stood at the shore and heard the waves sway.
Woosh, woosh—the waves gently hit the shore and faded away. My heart was calmed, my anxiety and pain quelled. My only hobby was listening to the seas by the shore.
"What are you doing here?"
Suddenly, I heard an unfamiliar girl’s voice from behind. It was a cold, clear voice, but definitely not aloof.
"…Just listening to the sounds of the seas."
I didn’t expect anyone else to come here and answered somewhat nervously.
"Are you just listening? You aren’t looking?"
"But I can’t see it anyway?"
Yes, it’s already night. The sea, which was sparkling like emeralds in the day, was only darkness at this time to my eyes, reliant only on the light of the stars. I could only listen to the waves silently, and experience the sea this way.
"So why can’t you just come by during the day?"
The girl sat next to me. I initially had an impression that she was an adult, but given where the voice came from, it seemed that she was about the same height. I guessed she's about the same age as me.
"I actually wanted to do that. But I'll be found out if I go out during the day."
I decided to open up, and continued the conversation with her.
"Found out? By who?"
"…I'm actually sick. I shouldn't be anywhere else other than the ward room. But it's painful to remain on the hard bed all the time. That's why sometimes, I come here to avoid being spotted by anyone else."
The painful treatment, the eternal suffering.
Whenever I had the time to escape from them, I would feel healed.
"More importantly, who are you? It's my first time hearing your voice."
I was glad to be able to chat with a girl my age, so I too asked her.
"I was brought here recently, for a little something."
"…I see."
This place she spoke of was definitely not a hospital. We were at an orphanage built on a certain island.
"But it's fine. The children who live here are all like us."
Yes, they're like us?unfortunate children. I guess that's what we're fine with? No, I knew very well that nothing was fine, but at this moment, that was all I could only say.
"Your name is?"
The girl then asked me.
"Number 602."
That's what the adults call me, so I answered.
It wasn't limited to me. All the children in this facility were all the same…but this girl will get used to it, some day??
"Nagisa."
Initially, I thought she was talking about the rippling waves.
"Since you like the sea, that will be your name."
But the girl said so, and smiled. Or at the very least, it looked like she was smiling.
"Say, what about your name?"
And so I asked her back.
"I don't have a name…but"
"But?"
"I have a codename."
And the name she said was something I would never forget in my life
I'll never forget it , so I thought.
