Yotsugi Buddy
001
Thinking about it, it had been quite a while since I’d come to know Ononoki Yotsugi. When I met that cute corpse doll for the first time, I had no idea that I would end up in this complicated relationship with her… And though I said “relationship”, I couldn’t find the words in my vocabulary that could perfectly describe my relationship with that tsukumogami.
Friends? Enemies? Observer and observed?
Perpetrator? Victim? Third party? Supporter?
Partner? Housemate? Stakeholder?
Witness? Lawyer? Executioner?
All of these seemed to be blatantly true. In fact, there had actually been times where I had declared as such. But the moment I said it out loud, it would feel like I was sliding off again in the wrong direction.
Expressionless and monotonous.
I had no idea what she was thinking.
What she thought, what she felt, what she did, all of it was utterly inscrutable.
Senjougahara Hitagi was my girlfriend.
Hanekawa Tsubasa was my benefactor, and Hachikuji Mayoi was my friend.
Kanbaru Suruga was my junior, and Sengoku Nadeko was an old acquaintance.
Oshino Shinobu was my partner, and Oshino Ougi was my alter ego.
Oikura Sodachi was my childhood friend, and Hamukai Meniko was my close friend.
Araragi Karen was family, and Araragi Tsukihi was family.
Then, who was Ononoki Yotsugi?
What was between me and her?
However, worrying about it like that was a waste of time… You could even say it was stalling for time. Even if I’d once been immortal for a mere two weeks, why did I need to attach a fitting label onto my relationship with Ononoki Yotsugi? Names were something you gave to identify things and make things easier to refer to.
But as long as the relationship between a former vampire and a shikigami zombie didn’t exist anywhere else, the relationship between me and her could just be—“us”.
Until the day our long relationship becomes a long farewell.
