Chapter 2284: Chapter 2285: Play the Long Game to Catch the Big Fish
After a grueling two hours, the battle between the two finally drew to a close.
Ji Qingyan’s clothes were disheveled, her face flushed as red as a ripe peach, the intensity indescribable.
At that moment, the ringtone of Ji Qingyan’s phone broke the ambiguous silence.
It was a call from Song Lan.
“It’s already past six, why aren’t you home yet? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t work overtime today?”
“Oh, something came up unexpectedly, but I have dealt with it and am heading back now.”
...“Hurry back, the food is ready, and it will get cold if you wait much longer.”
“Got it.”
Ji Qingyan hung up the phone and turned to glare at Lin Yi.
“Why are you so annoying?”
“How am I the annoying one? I only started things off. You were quite cooperative in the middle, and you even moved on your own a few times. You performed well.”
“Shut up, you’re embarrassing me.”
Ji Qingyan’s cheeks reddened even more, and she pinched Lin Yi at his waist.
“Hurry and pack up, let’s go home for dinner.”
“Okay then.”
Lin Yi cleaned up the battlefield, and Ji Qingyan went back to the changing room, put on a new set of clothes, and then they drove home.
All the problems had been resolved, and without any worries, Lin Yi’s appetite improved, resulting in him eating three bowls of rice.
“Lin Yi, it’s not that I don’t want you to eat, but this eating in spurts is not good for your stomach. Let’s slow down a bit,” Song Lan said.
“I was just really busy today, did a lot of work, and have burnt too much energy; I need to replenish.”
Without meaning to, the speaker caused the listener to blush.
Ji Qingyan’s cheeks flushed instantly.
“Yanyan, why is your face so red? Are you catching a cold?” asked Song Lan anxiously.
“No, not at all…” Ji Qingyan replied vaguely, “Maybe it’s just because the air conditioning is a bit too strong; it’ll be fine in a while.”
“As long as it’s not a cold.”
“This season’s flu is pretty severe. You both need to be careful when going out, don’t catch anything from others.”
“Got it.”
Ji Qingyan responded haphazardly, and kicked Lin Yi under the table.
Lin Yi turned his head to look at Ji Qingyan, puzzled, as if asking why she had kicked him.
But Ji Qingyan ignored him and went upstairs after finishing her meal to work on her things.
Later, Lin Yi also went back, laid down on his bed, and dialed Qiu Yuluo’s number.
“I heard you’ve sorted out your situation there?”
“Everything has been clarified, but there’s no need to pursue the inside mole issue further; I’ve taken care of it.”
“If you say so, then we won’t pursue it.”
“Any news from the Zhou family?”
“We are still investigating, but the main evidence only points toward them transferring assets overseas, and there’s nothing implicating them in any dealings with Hongmen,” explained Qiu Yuluo.
“You acted too quickly back then in Pengcheng; if some had been left alive, the investigation wouldn’t be so tough now.”
“I was only thinking of revenge at that time, didn’t consider much else; looking back, it was a bit impulsive.”
“Let’s not talk about that now, but we do have some progress on this end,” Qiu Yuluo said.
“One of the men you killed was sent by the Zhou family to make the deal, but he was a ‘black man,’ not related to the Zhou family at all.”
“A ‘black man’?”
“That’s their jargon within their ranks, referring to someone who’s hired to take the fall, and they charge a high fee. The advantage is that they don’t expose the identity of their employer, even taking the penalty upon themselves if it comes to it.”
“Send me this person’s information; I’ll look into it when I have time.”
“That’s fine, especially since Zhong Hai is in your jurisdiction, and my team is also there; it will be easy for you to investigate.”
“That was my thought.”
“By the way, one more thing I wanted to ask about the Zhou family, you guys know what you’re investigating, right? If you have evidence, why not just arrest them and interrogate them?”
“At first, we thought the same, since it’s not necessary to keep people like the Zhou family around. But in our investigations, we found that the Zhou family has close ties with a foreign power and seems to be planning some sort of deal. Hence, we’re playing the long game here, hoping to gain more from this line.”
“They’ve even connected with foreign forces now? The Zhou family really has some reach.”
“Our actions might have alerted them a bit,” Qiu Yuluo said seriously.
“The downfall of the Pengcheng Chamber of Commerce and Hongmen has indeed made the Zhou family feel threatened. Current clues and signs clearly show they are panicking; otherwise, they wouldn’t opt to collaborate with foreign forces.”
“We’d better thoroughly investigate this lead then. If there are new developments, let me know.”
“Don’t worry, you won’t miss out.”
After hanging up with Qiu Yuluo, Lin Yi’s hands rested behind his head.
Before long, he received a message from Qiu Yuluo with information about the trafficker.
His name was Huang Renbo, 32 years old, who had spent six years in prison, and beyond that, there wasn’t much other useful information.
As Xiao Bing was injured, Lin Yi assigned this task to Luo Qi, asking her to investigate this person.
After delegating the task, Lin Yi reviewed his plans internally; there were two main matters at hand.
First, to find evidence of the Zhou family’s dealings with Hongmen.
Second, to arrest the Zhou family members.
Neither task seemed particularly difficult, and with the lunar New Year approaching in a month, he hoped to resolve these issues before the new year arrived.
At that moment, the door of the room was pushed open, and Lin Yi saw Ji Qingyan, dressed in a pink silk nightgown, wiping her hair as she entered from outside.
Lin Yi instinctively glanced at his watch.
“Going to bed at just past nine?”
Ji Qingyan nodded naturally, “I’m not feeling great today, want to rest early.”
“By the way, there’s something I need to discuss with you; I heard from Tao Yuan that the money for several companies has been transferred, and they are planning to make an announcement soon. There will be a groundbreaking ceremony to hype up this event; do you want to participate?”
“Sure, I’ll swing by.”
The carbon-based chip was of great significance to both Lingyun Group and the entirety of China; if there was time, it was worth attending.
After returning to bed, Ji Qingyan played on her phone for a while and fell asleep around ten.
The next morning was business as usual.
When Lin Yi woke up, Ji Qingyan was already out of bed.
After finishing morning routines and breakfast, Lin Yi drove Ji Qingyan to her company and then headed to the Xinshan branch office.
On the way, Lin Yi thought about a system task.
The police job was near complete, only 10% left.
However, this ultimate task, offering only 100,000 Master Level Driving Skills, shouldn’t be too difficult.
Lin Yi tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.
After finishing the police job, he would have to become a Daoist priest.
What a pain in the ass.
