NOT GOOD-BYE, BUT THANK YOU

At the end of it all, there was one memory that occupied Leene’s mind.

“I’m still just as weak as you say. But I can help keep you safe out there. Will you…let me come with you?”

That was what Leene had said as she had taken his hand and enveloped the battered young werewolf in a healing light. Bete had paused for a long moment before he answered.

“Do what you want. If you think you can keep up, then just try it.”

Leene had been overjoyed to hear that. His answer made her spirit soar and filled her heart with warmth. She hoped that one day, she would be able to mend all the scars in his heart, even the deepest ones…

…That wish would have to stay unfulfilled.

“You and the others died for nothing. You died ’cause you were weak and stupid, and now you’re gonna carry that shame for what’s left of your miserable lives and into the next one.”

The stone walls of Knossos were bathed in the blood of her friends. Leene lay there alone dying, listening to Bete’s scornful words. She knew what he was telling her to do. She knew he was upholding his duty, the responsibility of the strong to the weak.

And he was strong. For all his scars, Bete was the strongest wolf she had ever known.

I ended up hurting him. That goes against the cardinal rule that every healer follows.

The guilt was enough to drive her mad. She really was every bit as weak as Bete said.

“Well, get it over with. Don’t let me see you in the next life. Don’t even leave your nest if you know what’s good for you.”

The sound faded. The world seemed to grow smaller. Inescapable death was near. Through it all, she never took her eyes off him. Though she lacked the strength to talk, her eyes communicated her final regret and asked for forgiveness.

“You dumbass.”

And then he spoke his final words to her.

“How many times have your hands saved me? You’ve done enough.”

Leene’s eyes flew open, and tears began to fall.

When she closed her eyes for the last time, she wore a peaceful smile on her lips, and her heart rested easy now that she knew her efforts had not been in vain. A warm feeling enveloped her, bringing solace in her final moments, as Leene’s soul softly slipped from this world.

Her very last thought was I’m so glad I fell in love with him.
