The Dragon Shadow Guards of the State of Zhao always carried swords, and Long Yi was no exception.
With a single motion, he flicked his wrist, sending the long sword at his waist into the air. Then, leaping upward, he twisted midair, grabbed the sword in reverse, and with a swift motion, drove both the sword and its scabbard deep into the stone-paved ground where he had just been standing.
Like an impenetrable shield, they firmly protected Gu Jiao behind them.
This was the boundary; anyone who crossed it would die!
An Hun stared at the sword and scabbard embedded in the stone ground. It was not surprising for a sharpened blade to pierce through, as it was meant for attack. But for the blunt scabbard to also be lodged deep into solid rock——
This alone spoke volumes about the sheer force behind Long Yi’s strike.
An Hun narrowed his eyes. "Let’s see just how strong you really are!"
From behind Gu Jiao, the Black Wind King galloped over, stopping at her side and sniffing her scent to check if she was injured.
"I'm not hurt." Gu Jiao reassured it, patting its head. She had only twisted her right ankle slightly, nothing serious.
Man and horse remained still in the alley, quietly watching the battle unfold.
True formidable experts never needed elaborate, flashy moves, especially death warriors, whose sole purpose was assassination. Every strike was straightforward, brutal, and aimed to kill.
Long Yi fought with his fists. An Hun used his palms. Long Yi threw a punch directly at An Hun’s chest, and with his level of strength, he could have shattered An Hun’s ribcage on impact, causing his heart to explode instantly.
Of course, An Hun would never let him succeed so easily. He raised his palm and caught Long Yi’s punch head-on.
Long Yi's strength was far beyond An Hun’s expectations. He had thought he could repel Long Yi with a single palm strike, but instead, he was forced back by Long Yi’s unstoppable power, sliding dozens of steps backward. The soles of his shoes nearly sparked from the friction against the stone-paved road.
An Hun was pushed all the way to the alley’s entrance. He kicked off against the wall behind him, using the force to leap into the air. He vaulted over Long Yi’s head, appearing behind him, intending to launch a sneak attack at Long Yi’s back with a powerful palm strike.
But before his attack could land, Long Yi spun around and threw a punch!
An Hun was sent flying by the sheer force of Long Yi’s blow!
Gu Jiao: "Wow!"
Just as An Hun was about to crash into the rooftop, he reached out and grabbed the eaves, using the momentum to spin several times in midair, dispersing the overwhelming force.
Then, with a firm pull of his arm, he executed a perfect side flip and landed steadily on the rooftop.
His narrowed eyes locked onto Long Yi, who stood in the alley below, a flicker of disbelief flashing through his gaze.
Even though he had only used less than fifty percent of his strength just now, it was worth noting that, over the years, he had rarely exerted more than thirty percent in combat.
Yet today, for the first time in twenty years, he had been sent flying with just one punch despite using nearly half of his power.
"Who exactly are you?" He asked coldly.
After Long Aotian, this was the second time An Hun had encountered an opponent who stirred such immense curiosity within him.
For a true expert, improving one’s own strength wasn’t enough; one also had to study formidable opponents.
Long Yi remained silent.
Among the six states, only the Dragon Shadow Guards of the State of Zhao were trained to be mute assassins, a unique condition imposed by the former Emperor. No other death warriors in any kingdom were subjected to such a restriction.
Thus, in An Hun’s eyes, Long Yi’s silence was not due to an inability to speak, but rather because he simply couldn’t be bothered to respond.
An Hun felt thoroughly insulted.
Seated atop her horse, Gu Jiao leisurely watched An Hun standing on the rooftop. With a casual chuckle, she said, "Hey, you, the one called An Hun. Why aren’t you fighting anymore? Are you scared? Be a good boy and kowtow to me, admit defeat, and maybe I’ll consider giving you a swift end!"
An Hun let out a cold snort and turned his gaze toward Gu Jiao. "Brat, you’re awfully arrogant. This master was only using less than half of his strength just now. Do you really think you can defeat me just by bringing in some random death warrior from outside?"
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. "Referring to yourself as ‘this master’? Such arrogance for someone with limited skill. Heh."
An Hun had once mocked Gu Jiao along those lines—”Such arrogance for someone so young."
Now, Gu Jiao was throwing them right back at him with an air of supreme arrogance.
An Hun’s expression turned icy. "Brat, don’t get ahead of yourself. Once I kill him, you’re next!"
Gu Jiao turned her head toward Long Yi. "Long Yi, he’s threatening me."
An Hun: "…"
Long Yi’s eyes grew even colder. He suddenly stomped the ground, launching himself toward the rooftop at lightning speed!
This time, An Hun no longer held back. He unleashed seventy percent of his power.
The battle raged from the rooftop to the alley and back onto the rooftops again.
Fortunately, this was an old street slated for demolition, long since abandoned. Otherwise, the sheer intensity of the fight would have alarmed everyone nearby.
As the battle continued, An Hun felt an increasing sense of familiarity.
Why do his moves seem so recognizable?
Have I fought him before?
But if he were such a formidable opponent, I should have remembered him.
Gu Jiao carefully observed the duel. "…It looks like they’re evenly matched, but Long Yi clearly has more stamina. He hasn’t even gasped for breath, while An Hun’s breathing and rhythm have started to falter. As expected of Long Yi…"
An Hun took another punch from Long Yi, but in return, he landed a palm strike on Long Yi, albeit only half a strike. Long Yi had dodged so swiftly that only half of the attack actually landed.
Yet the clash was not without gain.
Long Yi’s sleeve was torn open, and a small black object tumbled out.
An Hun instinctively reached out and caught it. When he got a clear look at the item, his eyes widened in shock. "This is…"
But before he could finish speaking, Long Yi swiftly kicked the back of his hand, sending the jade thumb ring flying into the air. He immediately snatched it back and tucked it into his chest.
An Hun paid no mind to his fractured hand bones as he frowned and demanded, "Where did you get that jade ring!? Where is its owner!?"
Long Yi’s only response was a brutal punch.
An Hun fixed his gaze on Long Yi for a long moment. Then, he made an extraordinarily bold decision.
Risking serious injury, he lunged forward, deliberately taking a direct hit from Long Yi’s fist!
And at the very moment when his shoulder blade was on the verge of shattering, he reached out and tore off Long Yi’s mask.
When that face, so strikingly similar to the one in his memories—only more mature and seasoned—entered his sight, his entire breath caught in his throat.
He forgot to resist. His body plummeted rapidly, his eyes widening in utter disbelief.
"How could it be you—"
Shi Tian!
Impossible…
Absolutely impossible…
Shi Tian had vanished twenty years ago. Based on what he knew of Shi Tian, the man was most likely dead. Otherwise, there was no way the State of Yan would have no news of any trace of him for so long.
But if he wasn’t Shi Tian, then how could he bear a face identical to Shi Tian’s?
The only difference was that he no longer had the youthful innocence of a boy.
No wonder he had felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity from the very beginning.
It was Shi Tian!
Shi Tian had returned!
But why… why was Shi Tian with someone from the State of Zhao?
And more than that, why was there no longer any trace of the madness and killing intent that once burned in Shi Tian’s eyes?
Suddenly, a voice echoed in his mind.

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
