Chapter 895: No Lives Left Unreaped
The barrier fractured violently under the relentless hail of rifle fire, a loud, heart-rending crack echoing through the lab as it shattered into thousands of shimmering fragments. A sudden silence—brief, deafening—seized the room, before the guards surged forward mercilessly, their rifles blazing.
“Hold them back! Anna still needs more time!” shouted one of the young demons, voice thick with desperation and fear. They bravely lunged forward, wielding nothing more than makeshift blades and shards of metal, but they were cut down brutally, their anguished screams ringing hauntingly off the cold, sterile walls.
Blood splattered vividly across the white surfaces, bodies collapsing lifelessly, eyes wide with terror and disbelief. Their final desperate cries etched themselves into the air, merging with the sharp, ruthless laughter of the guards.
At the center of the chaos stood Cila, her eyes wide and shaking with grief as she watched her friends fall around her. Her metallic hands trembled uncontrollably, heart seizing in despair as she glanced frantically toward the tablet beside Anna’s unconscious form.
“Ninety percent... come on!” she whispered desperately, her voice trembling, tears pooling in her eyes as she watched the progress bar crawl agonizingly forward. Every second felt torturous, each heartbeat a painful reminder of the sacrifice they had all made.
The guards turned their attention towards her, guns aimed coldly. Cila knew she had mere seconds left. Her heart clenched, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she leaned swiftly toward Anna. Gently, trembling, she pressed a tender kiss upon her friend’s forehead, a soft sob escaping her lips.
“We will see you on the other side, Anna,” she murmured softly, voice breaking with heartache. “Mira and our friends will be waiting.”
Gathering her last reserves of strength, she spun around fiercely, charging a vibrant ball of dark-red mana in her metallic hands. A cry tore itself from her throat—a desperate, defiant sound born of love, grief, and unwavering determination—as she lunged fearlessly toward Lenny, her eyes blazing with tearful rage.
“You monsters will rot in hell!!” Her shout resonated through the lab, a battle cry heavy with pain and courage.
“Pah!” Lenny scoffed disdainfully, unamused by her defiant gesture. With a brutal swipe, he swung his walking stick viciously into Cila’s body, smashing her violently down onto the cold, unforgiving floor. Her mana dissipated instantly, the ball of dark red energy fading away as she coughed painfully, blood splattering from her lips.
“How dare you,” Lenny snarled venomously, his face twisted in disgusted rage. “How fucking dare you demon rats think you can just waltz in here and ruin my lab? Do you know how much you’ve cost me, you filthy little pests?”
His voice echoed mercilessly as he raised his stick again, his eyes cold and savage. With brutal, relentless swings, he brought the heavy stick crashing down repeatedly onto Cila’s head, each sickening impact sending sprays of blood and bone fragments across the sterile floor.
“You pathetic... insolent... creatures!” he roared angrily, voice cracking with frenzied fury, until nothing recognizable remained of the once brave, kind young demoness. He stood panting, glaring hatefully down at the lifeless, broken form beneath him, blood dripping from the tip of his cane.
Taking a deep breath, Lenny finally stepped over the carnage, shoes squelching grotesquely through pools of blood and gore. Approaching Anna’s limp figure, he clicked his tongue impatiently, eyes narrowing with irritation and contempt.
“Huh?” he scoffed in disdain. “Your little friends knocked you out? What a jo—” His voice cut off abruptly, eyes widening in dread as he suddenly noticed the transparent digital tablet beside her, the bright progress bar reading 99%, with the word “Rebooting” blinking ominously above it.
“SHIT!” Panic surged through him like ice, fingers trembling as he snatched up the tablet, desperately jabbing at the CANCEL button with shaking hands. But just as he pressed it, the bar flicked inexorably to 100%, the screen flashing blank.
Lenny’s breath caught painfully in his throat, a freezing dread filling him as his gaze shifted slowly, fearfully, toward the place Anna’s unconscious body had lain mere moments before. But she was no longer there. The restraints were shattered, twisted metal remnants lying uselessly upon the bed.
A fierce gust of wind surged violently through the lab, sending papers swirling chaotically and splattering fresh blood across the pristine white walls. The lifeless bodies of the guards collapsed instantly, crumpling soundlessly to the floor, their eyes wide with stunned horror.
Lenny’s heart slammed frantically in his chest, cold terror clutching his throat tightly, choking him breathless as a terrifyingly powerful presence loomed directly behind him. Its overwhelming killing intent suffocated him, gripping his heart in a vise of dread.
He swallowed thickly, forcing a strained chuckle from his trembling lips as he slowly raised his shaking hands, desperately attempting false bravado.
“C-Come on, kitty... let’s not—Urgh!”
Before his plea could fully escape, Anna’s slender hand grasped his nape fiercely, fingers digging mercilessly into his flesh. She jerked him close, her voice low and chilling, cold fury vibrating dangerously through every word.
