Chapter 4
Peril
Crises befell all three locations at almost exactly the same time.
It was 2300 hours. The dead of night.
As the buildings and billboards gleamed over on Main Street, people began leaving the side streets in droves. Mitario might have been the biggest metropolis on the globe, but the seediness of its underbelly was world-class as well. Law-abiding citizens did their best to avoid walking down back alleys at night.
The only people who went there were those who preferred to operate away from prying eyes.
It was those very alleys that the girls raced through.
One of the alleyways sat to the northwest of the station.
After securing their victory in the underground casino, Monika and Sara got attacked again. A sniper shot whizzed through the air as they made their way back to Main Street. All the bullet did was graze Monika’s leg, but it told them that they needed to run.
The aftertaste from their win left their mouths in a hurry as they found themselves back in combat.
The two of them moved in tandem and fled away from Main Street.
As they ran through the alleys, though, it suddenly dawned on them that there was far more than one sniper. Monika hurled her mirrors to try and figure out how many of them there were, and the ultimate count she settled on was twelve. Their foes were racing across rooftops and creeping along alleyway walls as they chased the two of them down.
Before the Lamplight duo realized it, they’d been lured into the snipers’ hunting grounds. They were trapped alongside a river with nowhere to run.
Not even Monika had gone and memorized the exact layout of every alleyway in Mitario. Their foes probably lived in the area, and they’d used their knowledge of the terrain to devastating effect.
When Monika and Sara finally broke away, they dove inside a nearby building and took a moment to catch their breaths. It was a tailor shop, and the workers had already gone home for the day. The two girls hid themselves behind the counter.
“Well, this doesn’t look great for us,” Monika said with a hint of worry in her smile.
Their foes were checking every building in the area one by one. It was only a matter of time before they rooted her and Sara out.
So, Miranda was basically just the scouting party…
Their opponents were far stronger than she’d given them credit for.
“M-Miss Monika…!” Sara said with tears in her eyes. “You could’ve gotten away if it was just you, right? The only reason you’re stuck here is because you had to protect me!”
“Is it? I dunno what you’re talking about.”
“I-if we’re both going to die here, then it would be better if you just made a break for it on your own…”
“……………”
After a long silence, Monika grinned self-mockingly. “If I did that, it’d make a certain someone real sad.”
“What…?”
“Hey, don’t ask me. I barely get what I’m saying myself. Bottom line is, ditching you was never an option.”
Monika gave Sara a thump on the shoulder and glanced outside the building. She could sense the snipers starting to congregate.
It was going to take more than just her to break through their ranks.
