The hanging question that was bound to be asked. When Gary had pointed out the Altered's before, Saiber had already confirmed that there were no changes in a person's heat signature with his mask on.
So, if the Altered hunters and particularly a five star Altered hunter was unable to tell that these people were Altered, how could a complete amateur? When this happened, there was usually one good answer that people could lead to, and that was that Gary himself had to be working with the Altered's as well.
At least this would have been Saiber's natural train of thought, the reason he didn't think this way, was all due to how persistent Gary had been. Constantly pushing and stating, that they were Altered.
He continued to push, and the one that had ignored that push was Saiber, but still he had to ask the question.
'I had a lot of time to think about this, and I hope this answer works.' Gary said.
"I know if I said it was just a hunch you wouldn't believe me." Gary answered in a soft voice as he looked down. "But you see, the reason why I became an Altered hunter, it's because I've had a few people close to me taken out by them.
"I lost people because of the Altered's, and not just that, I nearly lost my family as well. My situation, might not be a unique one, but those close to me I care about them, and because of the Altered's everyone I know needs to live in fear, or behind closed doors."
When Gary was speaking, he was speaking the truth. He remembered Tyler their Driver, he remembered turning Billy, and he remembered when his mother was in the hospital hurt. All of those that were attacked all of those that had to worry including his sister about what could happen to them at any time.
All of the fears that Gary had were being portrayed genuinely in his voice.
"This type of life I live, I live in a way to not trust anyone." Gary said. "I couldn't be sure, but small traits, the way they acted, how we didn't know them and they were in ruin city. Even if they are allies, I needed to make sure.
"Maybe because in this situation I was so much of an outsider, I could see and feel what they were doing was different, but I also knew it would be hard to convince you that these small things, eyes on the crates, moving around so they were near the other Hunters at all times, would be enough reason to prove they were Altered.
"At the end of the day though, more Altered hunters were killed…" Gary then looked right up into Saiber's eyes at this point. "And it was all because you didn't believe me."
Instead of sadness in Gary's voice like the rest of the words he spoke, the last one conveyed true anger, because it was the truth as well. If Saiber had listened to him, then other people didn't have to die.
Maybe other Altered members would have been afraid to say it to Saiber, that he had messed up, but Gary wasn't an Altered hunter, so he said it right to him.
"You're right." Saiber replied. "You pressed me more than once and it was completely my mistake. From now on, if you spot anything, no matter how small it is, then you report to me."
No longer speaking to Gary, Saiber went to check up on the rest and prepare. They needed to hide the bodies, and see if they were still on course to the Garden.
As Saiber walked back up to the second deck, he couldn't stop thinking about the rookie.
'I remember when I would go on missions, that Blackjack would also have a sense for things, even before my mask could pick it up. I guess he is his apprentice, and there was a reason why he was so adamant about bringing this one along.' Saiber thought to himself.
Gary took a big deep breath, a sigh of relief. His tricky situation and first struggle with the Altered hunters were over. The outcome, did have it's positives though.
Now it felt like Saiber trusted Gary more, so situations like that one shouldn't arise again. Then Gary also was able to witness some of the top Altered hunters skills. They were extremely skilled strong enough to go against powerful werewolves.
Their help would be greatly appreciated in going up against the Lupus clan. Although he didn't like that they were sacrificing their lives, Gary had to get it in his head, that they were going to do this themselves anyway.
With or without him, and if all went well then the people in Slough and the people he cared about wouldn't be hurt.
'Which is why, I'm going to do my best to help you Altered hunters out and protect you. It's the least I can do for taking part in this fight, where you don't understand the larger grand scheme of things.' There was sadness about it.
The altered hunters were losing their lives, as they were being used as Pawn's in a bigger game of things, but it wasn't a good thing for them to know the truth otherwise all of the lives that were lost would have felt useless to them.
"The Bitonic Garden is just up ahead, estimated time till land, ten minutes!" One of the men shouted.
Gary ran up the stairs, and he could see it from the outside, the large glass dome area that went on bigger than any arena he had seen. They had gone through this much already, but there was a high chance there was far worse waiting for them in the Garden.
"I hope the other two, don't have as much trouble as I did."
