The following day, Shen Shiqi and his companions arrived in the small town where Yue’er had recently been. They wandered through the streets, confident in their gathered intelligence. “According to our information,” Shen Shiqi declared, “that little girl was last seen in this town, but it seems she’s no longer here. However, it’s easy to figure out her next move, as there’s only one road leading south out of town.”

“In that case, let’s go!” another companion said with a smile. “The big city is to the south. That little girl should be a member of a family in that city, so it should be easier to find her.” He glanced around at the other cultivators, a shared determination in their eyes, and then continued on their way.

Meanwhile, Yue’er, believing that her pursuers wouldn’t be able to track her, had relaxed her pace, feeling less weary. As evening approached and the sky began to darken, she spotted a village ahead, nestled amidst cornfields. She decided to seek rest and a meal there.

However, her chosen disguise proved to be a double-edged sword. Because she was dressed as a beggar, she was met not with hospitality, but with scorn. Before she could even get close, she was chased away by a group of mischievous children from the village.

“Go away, go away! Stinky beggar, don’t come into our village!” the children shouted, pelting her with small stones.

Yue’er froze for a moment, then swiftly dodged the incoming stones, backing away. “Don’t throw stones at me, don’t hit me!” she cried out.

“Little beggar, get out of here! You’re not allowed in our village. Hurry up and leave, or I’ll let Big Yellow bite you!” one of the children yelled, then turned and shouted, “Big Yellow, Big Yellow, come out!”

Yue’er watched as a large yellow dog came bounding out, barking ferociously at her. Seeing the dog charging, she instinctively backed away, then turned and shouted, “Control your dog! Otherwise, I’ll kill it and eat it!”

“Big Yellow, bite him! Big Yellow, bite him!” the children cheered, clapping their hands in excitement.

Yue’er spun around and fled. After running a short distance, she saw an old beggar walking toward the village, using a tree branch as a walking stick. Seeing him, she called out a warning, “The children there won’t let beggars come near them, and there’s a big yellow dog that bites people. Old beggar, run away!”

The old beggar merely glanced at her, a faint smile playing on his lips. “You run first. This old beggar will go get something to eat.” With that, he continued his steady walk towards the village.

Yue’er didn’t linger. She continued her retreat to a mountain path. After running a considerable distance and realizing the big yellow dog was no longer pursuing her, she found a secluded spot to rest in the woods beside the path.

“These kids are so mean, bullying people like that,” she muttered, wiping sweat from her forehead with her sleeve. She pulled out some water from her interspatial ring to drink, then took out some other provisions.

Seeing only pastries and dried meat, she frowned, letting out a silent sigh. “I want to eat a proper meal. I don’t want pastries and dried meat anymore.” After all, the food she had eaten on the road had been haphazard at best, and the constant diet of pastries and dried meat had become tiresome. She tucked the items back into her spatial pocket, pulled out a fruit to eat, and then agilely leaped onto a tree branch, intending to sleep.

The small forest was quiet, save for the faint rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. However, after some time, a tantalizing aroma of cooked meat began to drift through the air. The smell made Yue’er, who had only eaten a piece of fruit and had just closed her eyes, swallow hard. Her eyes snapped open, and she sat up, looking around, her hunger suddenly reignited.
