SNOW WHITE SIDE

Snow White had been acting quickly since her return. She didn’t need Fal to tell her that she had to hurry. She’d already scanned the list of participants, and two names in particular concerned her. Leaving those two in the game would accelerate the death toll. But having said that, if Snow White interfered directly, the other girls would face the consequences. She couldn’t take out the master directly, either. There had been no weaknesses in her heart.

What Snow White could do was attack from another angle.

She pulled some strings with an acquaintance who worked in the same division as her, saying she wanted to meet the supervisor of the magical-girl management division. This acquaintance had, in the past, used her magical-girl powers for acts of violence in search of a reward. As long as Snow White had dirt on her, the girl couldn’t say no.

The supervisor of the magical-girl management division was a typical old mage, the sort who looked down on the more recently established magical-girl division. No matter how Snow White begged, he would say he was obligated to follow the rules protecting classified information and refuse to tell her anything. He was very proud in his role as a mage, and Snow White would never be able to dig up some weakness of his to use against him, either. She would just be told to go through official channels, and that would be that.

But she wouldn’t make it in time that way. She had to get information about the master as quickly as possible. If Snow White’s hunch was correct, this mage was the way in.

She was facing the supervisor of the magical-girl management division in a room that was entirely black, save for the mandala-like magical sigils shining in vibrant, varied colors. He was a very stereotypical-looking mage, with a long gray robe that fell to his feet, an impressively long white beard, and a dramatic, twisted staff.

“Please use the official channels,” he said.

She’d known he would say that. “That won’t make it in time.”

“Not my concern.”

“Then I’m going to do my own investigation, so please tell me the management division password.”

“You think I could tell you that, fool?” His form faded, and he disappeared.

Snow White excused herself from the supervisor’s room. She’d gotten the information she needed. When she had requested that the supervisor tell her the password, his thoughts had flowed into her. Right as he’d thought, I can’t let her learn the password, she’d read a certain sequence of numbers and symbols from his mind.

Now Snow White just had to investigate. She hurried.
