Chen Sheng and Yao Xi were not only dorm mates but also desk mates, and in the classroom, two people shared a desk with an aisle in between. Next to Yao Xi, across the other side of the aisle, was a boy as thin as a bamboo pole who, as soon as the class ended, would move his chair over, grinning from ear to ear as he started chatting with Xue Yan.
“Hey, brother, are your grades good?”
Xue Yan shook his head and told the truth, “No.” His grades were indeed not good for the time being.
Hearing his response, Chen Sheng turned around and said to the boy as thin as a bamboo pole with a smile, “Zhou Ping, if you take a closer look at what books he has on his desk, you’ll know whether his grades are good or not.”
It was then that Xue Yan learned the name of the boy as thin as a bamboo pole was Zhou Ping.
Zhou Ping glanced at the books on Xue Yan’s desk, and when he saw the first-grade elementary school textbooks, his mouth dropped open, rendered speechless for a long time, just like Chen Sheng and the others when they first saw these textbooks, eventually managing to utter to Xue Yan, “…Admirable.”
“But,” Zhou Ping joked again, “you really can’t tell by looking at you. With your looks, one would think you’re not only handsome but also a good student with great grades.”
Xue Yan replied, “Not really, my basics are very poor right now. Maybe once I have a solid foundation, my grades might improve.”
Yao Xi couldn’t help but turn around too, shifting his chair closer to sit beside Xue Yan’s desk, “Anyway, we don’t have the guts to start learning again from the first grade like you.” He paused but couldn’t help adding, “Don’t be offended, but are you not worried that starting from such basics might be too late?”
Xue Yan couldn’t exactly say he had a photographic memory and just needed to read the books once to get through them quickly and not be late, so he simply said, “I don’t know if there will be enough time, but with only the last year of high school left, I want to try for University, so I have to take a gamble.”
“That makes sense,” Yao Xi nodded in agreement.
Zhou Ping said, “But your basics are really poor. I’ve seen people whose middle school basics were weak, but never elementary school. If I wanted to work on my foundations, with my bad grades, I’d probably start from middle school, not elementary.”
Before Xue Yan could respond, Chen Sheng interjected, “Why are you worrying about it so much? Let him work on his basics whenever he wants to.”
“Alright, alright,” Zhou Ping raised his hands in a surrender gesture, “I just couldn’t help but say something, no other meaning.”
Xue Yan laughed, “It’s okay; my basics are really poor.”
Zhou Ping threw another casual glance at the first-grade elementary school textbook in Xue Yan’s hands, “If your grades improve like this, then I might gain some confidence too.”
Chen Sheng immediately chuckled, “What, are you up for a bet?”
“Who’s afraid to?” Zhou Ping immediately accepted the challenge. “Xue Yan, there’s a baseline test tomorrow, and your re-starting of basics won’t count for that, but if your grades improve later on, I’ll definitely study hard and rebuild my basics too. I won’t complain about the hardship and exhaustion of studying anymore, even if it’s all in vain, I’m willing to go all out this last year.”
Yao Xi laughed and said to Xue Yan, “Don’t mind him, there’s no need to bet with him. He just thinks he definitely won’t get into University, so he’s given up on trying altogether, idling his days away.”
Zhou Ping protested indignantly, “You say that as if you’ve been working hard — your grades aren’t even as good as mine!” Although both had poor grades, there was still a hierarchy in their scores, and Yao Xi just couldn’t seem to improve despite his efforts.
Without getting upset, Yao Xi said, “That’s why I’m considering whether I should follow in Chen Sheng’s footsteps and become a sports student.”
