Chapter 1760: Chapter 1760: Not that much though!
Wu Lingxi didn’t even have to go to the kitchen to get her own food; her sister-in-law served it to her directly, with a face full of flattery and ingratiating gestures—it goes without saying, Wu Lingxi felt very smug inside.
During her time back home, she didn’t have to wash her own clothes, clean the house, or work the land or do any other labor.
Wu Lingxi thoroughly enjoyed this lifestyle, feeling as though, although she hadn’t hired any maids or servants, her parents, brother, sister-in-law, younger brother, and his wife were all serving her like maids and servants, and the feeling was much the same.
She had barely finished her dinner when her younger brother made a rare early return home.
In recent days, even when Younger Brother Wu came home, it was deep into the night, never this early.
This time, he returned with a bruised and swollen face, clearly having been beaten, and beaten badly at that, with wounds all over his body. The marks on his arms, long streaks as though from a beating with sticks.
...Mr. Wu, Mrs. Wu, Wu, Mrs. Wu, and Younger Brother Wu’s Wife were all startled at the sight of him and quickly rose from the dining table, rushing over to see what had happened.
Younger Brother Wu could only confess the truth, crying out, “I lost all my money and accumulated a mountain of debt. The gambling house demanded repayment, but I didn’t have it, so they beat me, and said they would give me only three days. If I don’t pay by then, they’ll chop off my hands and feet to settle the debt.”
Aside from Wu Lingxi, who didn’t seem to take it seriously and continued eating her meal,
everyone else was shocked.
Mrs. Wu still doted on her youngest son and immediately asked in a panic, “How much debt do you actually owe? I told you not to gamble, but you just had to. Look now!” As she spoke, she even struck her son.
At that moment, seeking money and not wanting to quarrel with his mother, he continued crying, “One thousand two hundred taels.”

Mr. and Mrs. Wu gasped in shock, “That much? Even if we sold ourselves, we wouldn’t have that kind of money!”
Younger Brother Wu’s Wife immediately sat down on the ground, sobbing and scolding, “You wretch, what kind of life are you making me live? What sort of days have I been passing in your company!”
But the debt was already there—what could they do?
Mr. Wu and Mrs. Wu could only sigh and say, “Let’s all contribute what we can, every little bit counts.”
Before Wu could speak, Mrs. Wu chimed in stingily, “Where are we to get the money to contribute? We have no money!”
Younger Brother Wu’s Wife then burst out, “Sister-in-law, how can you be like this! Isn’t this the same as leaving someone to die! The few hundred silver that Second Sister gave, you also took 200 silver, how can you say you have no money!”
Second Sister was, of course, Wu Lingxi.
Wu Lingxi was second in the family line-up; her parents had three children: an elder son, a daughter—that is, herself—and a younger son.
Mrs. Wu was adamant, her neck stiff as she retorted, “That was saved for the child in my belly! The child needs to live, to go to school, doesn’t that require money!” She went on, even with superficial indifference and a sense of towering injustice, she cursed, “Why are you only asking us, who have no money, to chip in? Lingxi is the wealthiest in the family, why don’t you ask her!”
Wu thought his wife made a lot of sense and naturally agreed, even adding, “Lingxi has already given several hundred silver to the family since her return, obviously having much more. Old Three, your debt of one thousand two hundred taels is nothing to her!”
Mr. and Mrs. Wu, Younger Brother Wu, and his wife all agreed and turned to Wu Lingxi, smiling ingratiatingly, asking her to contribute the money.
Wu Lingxi put down her chopsticks, pulled out a pouch from her bosom, emptied the few coins inside, and said indifferently, “I already said when I came back, I gave all my money to you, and you’ve all taken your share. This is all I have now, and if I were to contribute, this is all I could give. Take it all.”
