INTERMISSION E
After nearly two hours of looking at photographs and chatting, Celty decided to take a bit of a break.
“You know,” she said to Shinra, “once you start looking at photos, there’s no place to stop. The memories are just endless.”
“It’s a sign of how rich our days have been. Of course, I don’t need photos at all—I can simply close my eyes and remember everything in vivid detail!”
“…The scary part is that your memories are full of major elaborations and fantasies…”
“Oh, come now, Celty,” Shinra said, staring right at her, his cheeks red. “They’re my memories. Surely I should be allowed to embellish them.”
“Don’t act like you’re so principled! Remember, these are my memories, too!” Celty snapped back.
Shinra’s face lit up. “Celty…so you’re saying that your memories with me are important to you, too?!”
“Uh, well, I didn’t…” She fumbled around for a bit before glancing at the computer again, hoping to find a distraction. “Hey, let’s check out some more photos.”
“Come on, you can’t fool me, Celty!” He watched the screen with her, beaming, then noticed a green photo in the corner of the viewing list. “What’s that one?”
He pressed it on the touch-sensitive screen of the laptop, opening it up.
At first glance, it seemed to be nothing more than a joke, but Shinra, who was a part of it, was smiling with a different expression than usual.
“Ahh, this one…”
It was a very strange picture of Celty with a watermelon on her head. They traded some very nostalgic words.
“Ohh, I remember this. That was… Well, it all feels like a dream now.”
“It sure does,” Shinra said, lifting the corners of his mouth in a soft smile and casting a warm glance at Celty.
“It really was like a dream, in many ways.”
