ROYALTY AND RESPECT

“If you’ll excuse me, I shall go perform my ablutions.”

It was the night of Bell’s arrival on the eighteenth floor. After parting with Finn, Riveria took her leave and left the camp under cover of darkness. She was on her way to the forest spring to bathe, and the last thing she wanted was for the other members of her race to spot her. If they did, there would be no end of eager elves lining up to wait on her hand and foot. Riveria had experienced enough royal treatment to last a lifetime.

However, her optimism was short-lived. She only made it a few steps out of camp before she heard…

“Please allow me to accompany you, Lady Riveria!”

“Me too!”

“I-I’ll come as well!”

When Riveria turned around, she was greeted by a long procession of elves headed by the Level 4 adventurer Alicia, including a gaggle of female mages. Even Lefiya was there. Riveria rubbed the bridge of her nose and sighed.

“How many times must I tell you?” she groaned. “I do not wish to be treated like royalty.”

“But Lady Riveria, even so. The forest at night is filled with dangerous men…I mean, monsters. We simply cannot let you go by yourself!”

“““““Let us come with you!”””””

Riveria sighed and, sensing any further argument would be a waste of effort, allowed the elves to accompany her. They all bowed deeply and followed her closely. Not long after, the group arrived at their destination—a hidden spring nestled among mountain crags, like some undiscovered natural wonder.

The elves immediately took up a defensive formation around their liege, and Riveria sighed as she began to disrobe. She undid her hairpin, allowing a beautiful stream of jade-green hair to flow down her back. Lefiya and the other elves gasped in wonder as she slipped into the pool.

Then, as she began to wash herself, an unknown figure stepped into view.

“Wh-who’s there?!” the lookouts cried, and at their voices, the shadow slipped away back into the forest. While the elves worked themselves into a frenzy over the appearance of this intruder, Riveria’s mind remained fixed on the trespasser’s face, which only she had seen.

That was…the masked adventurer from the rescue team. I’m sure of it.

Upon investigation, there was a small jug of water and a rolled-up parchment left on the forest floor where the figure had been spotted.

“It’s…Alv Spring Water! I’d…er…I’d better make sure it’s not poisoned!”

“Alicia! That’s not fair!”

“She’s going to drink it all!”

“Of course not! I’m only doing this for Lady Riveria!”

The elves immediately started quarreling over the beverage, a dear luxury this far from the surface. Meanwhile, Riveria stepped out of the pool and examined the scroll. In prim and tidy letters, it read, To a noble and respected high elf. Riveria looked at it and the accompanying tribute and began to wonder.

“The masked adventurer…Just who are you, really?”
