WHO IS YOUR RIVAL?

“Lady Riveria? May I ask a question about this chant here?”

“Ah…Sure…”

Riveria looked at Lefiya and the magical textbook in her hand before giving a gentle nod. It was late at night in the Twilight Manor, and Riveria’s study was filled with plans for the upcoming expedition.

Lefiya had been coming to her regularly with questions for some days now, and though it was completely dark outside, the light of the magic-stone torches was more than enough to see the lifeless look in Lefiya’s eyes. It seemed like every day she spent the daylight hours training, only to return in the evening to seek Riveria’s advice. Her willingness to learn was impressive…and more than a little concerning.

“Lefiya…are you sleeping properly?”

“Of course. I make sure to get one hour every night.”

“You fool, we have an expedition coming up!” Riveria roared. The Falna enhanced an adventurer’s mental and physical capabilities, but there were limits. It was important to not overdo it, especially before a big mission, but Lefiya didn’t seem to be listening. She was staring silently at the words on the page instead.

Well, at least she’s making an effort.

Lefiya had always been eager to catch up to Aiz, but recently, she seemed possessed by something new—something that had driven her to be far more diligent, and even reckless, in her studies than ever before. Perhaps she had gained a rivalry with someone, Riveria thought, smiling.

After some instruction, Lefiya seemed to understand, and she thanked Riveria, bowed, and turned to leave the room. As she reached the doorframe, however, she stopped.

“Lady Riveria?” she asked. “Pardon the sudden question, but…is it true that people in the past used to sacrifice rabbits to put curses on people?”

“Yes, that’s right. Witches used rabbits as ingredients in potions and magic items. Why do you ask?”

Lefiya stared at the floor for a moment, then raised her head.

“Then what do you do if you want to curse a rabbit?”

“What kind of creature are you fighting against…?”

The look in her student’s eyes seemed wearier than ever. Riveria sighed. Sometimes she just didn’t understand this girl.
