Meanwhile, on the other side, after parting ways with Taoist Qingfeng, Liao Chen used his qinggong to make his way toward the City Lord’s residence.

He had come to kill Gongsun Yu.

But after stealthily infiltrating the City Lord’s residence and carefully searching every corner, he found no trace of Gongsun Yu’s presence.

Standing atop the roof, he frowned as he looked down at the obviously much more relaxed defenses of the City Lord’s residence and muttered to himself, “Strange... where has Gongsun Yu gone?”

……

“Your Highness, please be careful!”

Inside a small cattle shed, Mu Qingchen reached out to steady Shangguan Yan, who had nearly lost her footing.

Shangguan Yan regained her balance and composure, then said, “I’m fine.”

Mu Qingchen added, “It rained just recently. The entrance to the tunnel has taken in some water, and the ground is slippery. You must be extremely cautious.”

This was the same underground passage that Xuanyuan Qi had once taken with Gu Jiao and Tang Yueshan. After they exited, Xuanyuan Qi hadn’t activated the self-destruct mechanisms, so it was still possible to pass through it a second time.

Gu Jiao had drawn an exceptionally detailed map.

With battles raging on all four sides of Pucheng, the Crown Princess led Mu Qingchen and a team of elite warriors into the tunnel, heading to rendezvous with Shangguan Qing.

Mu Qingchen led the way, and the group descended into the underground passage with torches in hand. The last person closed the wooden door above them.

Inside the tunnel, the walls and floor were damp. After only a few steps, Shangguan Yan’s shoes were already soaked.

But she had no time to worry about such minor discomforts. Her heart was wholly consumed with concern for her son. It had already been a full day and night, and she had no idea what the situation in Ghost Mountain was like.

The southern gate had fallen, and the eastern gate should now be engaged in battle. She wondered whether Gongsun Yu had already sent someone to order Xie Hangzhou to withdraw.

They had no way of knowing that the Imperial Grandson of Great Yan was currently trapped beneath Ghost Mountain, but he might be so stubborn that he would hold out without retreating.

If, by any chance, Xie Hangzhou truly refused to retreat, then this tunnel was their only hope of escape.

Qing’er, you must hang on.

Mother is coming to save you.

Shangguan Yan had never been to Ghost Mountain before, and Mu Qingchen even less so. Among those accompanying them, there was at least one person from Pucheng, but unfortunately, he only knew the routes above ground and had absolutely no knowledge of the underground tunnels.

The moment they entered, everyone felt a wave of dizziness sweep over them.

The group arrived at a fork in the tunnel, with two separate paths leading off in different directions.

“Now… which way should we go?” Shangguan Yan asked, her voice echoing faintly in the confined space.

Mu Qingchen raised the lantern and cast its light over the sheepskin map in his hand before replying, “To the right.”

No matter how Gu Jiao’s writing might have been, the map she drew was astonishingly precise. It was clear and straightforward, with nothing to confuse or mislead them.

Mu Qingchen continued to lead the way at the front, while Shangguan Yan, anxious to see her son, followed closely behind.

After they had walked for a while, Mu Qingchen noticed something off in her breathing. He halted his steps and turned to look at her. “Your Highness, are you alright?”

Shangguan Yan wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and shook her head. “I’m fine. Just feeling a bit short of breath.”

Mu Qingchen looked up and scanned their surroundings before softly explaining, “A tunnel like this ought to have ventilation shafts, but since it’s rained recently, some of the vents may have been blocked by mud and silt.”

They were men, and martial experts at that, breathing in such conditions wasn’t overly difficult for them.

But Shangguan Yan was different. She was a woman, and more importantly, she was still recovering from an injury.

Mu Qingchen glanced at the map again and said to her, “If Your Highness can hold on a little longer, we’ll reach a wider section of the tunnel soon. It won’t be so stifling there.”

“Alright.” Shangguan Yan nodded, pressing her hand lightly to her chest.

They walked a bit further, and sure enough, the narrow passage began to widen until it was broad enough to accommodate two people walking side by side.

Shangguan Yan’s breathing gradually eased, her mind clearing as well, and she finally had the energy to observe and ponder the tunnel around them.

She spoke with genuine wonder, “I really can’t imagine who would build such a long tunnel.”

Mu Qingchen agreed, “Yes, it’s truly astonishing.”

Though the Ministry of Works oversaw water systems, agriculture, and construction, not even they could have crafted something of this scale and intricacy underground.

And more importantly, why build such a tunnel in the first place?

If it had been located beneath the City Lord’s residence or a military encampment, one might assume it served as a hidden escape route for troops.

But Ghost Mountain was a place rarely visited by people.

It was difficult to understand what purpose a tunnel here could possibly serve.

It was as if… someone had foreseen the disaster that would befall Ghost Mountain, and built this underground path in advance as a means to save others.

Mu Qingchen shook his head.

He had probably fought too many battles recently and was starting to let nonsense cloud his thoughts.

Confucius said not to speak of supernatural forces and monsters. He needed to focus on finding the right path and rescuing the Imperial Grandson as soon as possible!

The tunnel was pitch-black, and they had no way to tell how much time had passed. Eventually, they reached the final junction marked on the map.

Mu Qingchen said, “Your Highness, once we turn right up ahead, we’ll enter the cave behind the mountain. That place used to be the residence of General Xuanyuan Qi.”

He, too, now knew the story of Xuanyuan Qi and his son.

“Alright.” Shangguan Yan adjusted the armor around her waist slightly.

Mu Qingchen noticed the subtle motion and said, “I forgot Your Highness is still injured. Why don’t you rest here for a moment? I’ll go ahead and take a look.”

Shangguan Yan replied, “My wounds have long healed. It’s just that I haven’t walked this far in some time, so my waist is a little sore, that’s all.”

She was eager to see her son and didn’t want to sit idly by.

Mu Qingchen couldn’t stop her, so he could only let her do as she wished.

They quickly reached the rear mountain cave. With rescuing people as the priority, they didn’t linger but followed the map left by Gu Jiao, pressed a mechanism on the stone wall, and entered yet another tunnel.

Mu Qingchen said, “Liulang mentioned this place is very close to the village. We should be able to hear the Jin army’s movements.”

Shangguan Yan listened intently. “But it’s very quiet up above.”

Mu Qingchen nodded. “Exactly.”

Shangguan Yan frowned. “Could they have already withdrawn?”

Mu Qingchen analyzed calmly, “That’s certainly possible. When we were in the rear mountain cave earlier, I caught a glimpse of the sky, it’s getting late. When we entered through the southern city gate, the Han Family had already shown signs of defeat. By now, the southern gate has probably fallen completely. General Wang Man and Chang Wei were engaged at the eastern and western gates, and while the northern gate is farther, General Xiao and Warrior Tang should be arriving soon.”

With the threat closing in from all sides, it was difficult for the Jin army not to withdraw their forces from Ghost Mountain.

“Eh?”

In another small stone chamber large enough to accommodate more than ten people, Mu Qingchen suddenly came to a halt.

“What’s wrong?” Shangguan Yan asked.

--------------------------------------------

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don’t abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
