When Gu Jiao woke up, a lingering crimson hue still stained her vision, refusing to fade away.

In her dream, a dense mist of blood had filled the sky, and now it seemed to have seeped into this very room. Even the smooth, pearlescent beads adorning the bed canopy appeared to have transformed into deep red agate.

The stifling, nauseating scent of blood clung to the air, and broken, mangled corpses lay strewn across the wooden beams above.

Drip. Drip.

Thick, viscous drops of fresh blood fell, landing on her expressionless face—

“JiaoJiao!”

“JiaoJiao!”

Someone seemed to be calling her.

“JiaoJiao! JiaoJiao!” Little Jing Kong climbed onto the bed and shook her shoulder hard. “JiaoJiao, why aren’t you answering me?”

The blood-soaked corpse was blocked by a small, innocent face, and the nightmare came to an abrupt halt. Gu Jiao blinked, fully waking from the dream.

She looked at Little Jing Kong, who was staring at her with wide, worried eyes, and hoarsely responded, “Jing Kong.”

Little Jing Kong let out a long sigh of relief. "I was so worried about you just now."

Lying on the soft bed, Gu Jiao raised her hand and pulled the little one into her arms. "I’m fine."

Suddenly getting an affectionate hug, Little Jing Kong turned beet red.

He covered his flushed face with his tiny hands, his little feet wiggling awkwardly.

JiaoJiao really likes me the most!

“Uh… JiaoJiao… you’re hugging me a little too tight…”

He—he—he could barely breathe!

Fool. Why did you come? Why rush into a trap, knowing it was one, just to collect my body?

……

“JiaoJiao… Let’s go home… I’ll take you home…”

The blood-soaked young man shielded her tightly in his arms, just as she had once done for him in his childhood. His eyes were red with fury, his back and legs pierced by countless gleaming arrows.

His scorching blood stained her path to the underworld.

He placed her onto the bamboo raft bound for home, but he himself collapsed by the war-torn riverside.

The youngest War God of Great Yan… had fallen!

……

After breakfast, Gu Jiao made her usual trip to Black Wind Camp.

She made her rounds inspecting the training grounds. The generals were diligently drilling their troops, and the Black Wind Cavalry horses were dutifully carrying out their tasks.

Little Eleven, however, had not stopped causing havoc even after taking down more than a dozen horse trainers. Its boundless energy was enough to drive any horse mad.

Even the explosion training, which most horses feared, quickly became its favorite game.

The normally disciplined horse herd was thrown into chaos, turning the training ground into a massive disaster scene.

In the end, it took the Black Wind King to subdue Little Eleven by force before it finally behaved and resumed training.

Though it looked obedient, as it passed by one of the Black Wind Cavalry horses, it suddenly lifted a hoof and kicked the other horse’s rear!

The horse: “…”

Why was it so damn annoying?!

The price of its mischief was another round of punishment from the Black Wind King. In the end, Little Eleven limped off to train, looking utterly miserable.

“My Lord! My Lord!”

Advisor Hu jogged over energetically. Today, he had learned his lesson and was waving a feather fan he had procured from somewhere.

As he fanned Gu Jiao, he grinned and said, "Why are you here so early? The sun has barely risen!"

“I came to take a look.” Gu Jiao replied.

Advisor Hu chuckled, “After your orders were issued yesterday, they thundered through the camp like a storm, straightening out all the bad habits in Black Wind Camp! The officers you promoted are all in awe of you; there’s no way they wouldn’t take training seriously! You can rest easy!”

The officers she promoted were a mix of former Xuanyuan Family soldiers and new recruits.

They weren’t training diligently out of reverence for her, but because strict discipline and rigorous training were ingrained traditions of Black Wind Camp.

They held themselves to high standards and demanded the same from their subordinates.

For now, she only had a title. They didn’t truly follow her. It was simply their duty to obey orders.

Advisor Hu noticed that Gu Jiao’s expression remained completely unmoved and couldn’t help but wonder, had he flattered the wrong way?

Smiling, he said, “It’s so hot. My Lord, why don’t you rest in the tent for a while?”

Gu Jiao clasped her hands behind her back and said, “I’m going to find Wen Renchong.”

With that, she turned and headed toward the reserve camp.

Advisor Hu tried to stop her but failed, “Ah—My Lord! My Lord!”

“Oh, go take care of something for me.” Gu Jiao gave an order before leaving to find Wen Renchong.

The pile of weapons and armor that had been stacked high in the courtyard yesterday was now gone.

It seemed Wen Renchong had repaired them overnight.

A highly efficient man.

Wen Renchong sat inside, mending the armor delivered that morning.

Gu Jiao walked over.

Wen Renchong glanced up at her.

Gu Jiao looked at the shadow on the ground and said, “I’m not blocking the light.”

Wen Renchong lowered his head and continued repairing the armor.

“Need help?” Gu Jiao asked. “I used to be a physician, stitching things up is one of my specialties.”

Wen Renchong frowned slightly, as if impatient with this young man, yet unsure how to make him leave.

He simply replied, “No need.”

Gu Jiao sat on the doorstep, resting her elbow on her knee and propping her chin with one hand as she watched him. “I met with Li Shen and Zhao Dengfeng yesterday.”

Wen Renchong frowned, “What exactly are you trying to do?”

“I’m recruiting Xuanyuan Family’s old troops.” Gu Jiao said bluntly.

Black Wind Camp had remained strong under the Han Family’s rule for over a decade, but they had dismissed too many outstanding soldiers. Many of Xuanyuan Family’s old subordinates had left over time.

Wen Renchong, Li Shen, Zhao Dengfeng, and the now-deceased Shi Zhongkui were once the Four Fierce Generals of Black Wind Camp, secretly known as the Four Heavenly Kings.

Now, only Wen Renchong remained, and he had become a blacksmith.

If Gu Jiao wanted to restore the camp’s former morale, she had to bring these veterans back.

“There is no Xuanyuan Family anymore.” Wen Renchong said calmly.

Gu Jiao replied, “Daily question—are you returning to the vanguard camp? If not, I’ll ask again tomorrow.”

Wen Renchong said flatly, “How many times do I have to tell you? Even if you ask for a year, two years, five years, I won’t agree.”

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. “So you’re saying you’ll stay in Black Wind Camp for a year, two years, five years… never leaving?”

Wen Renchong abruptly stood up and went to stoke the forge, “You should leave!”

Gu Jiao dusted off her robe and stood up. “See you tomorrow!”

Wen Renchong pulled the bellows without looking back.

Gu Jiao wandered around the camp for a while before returning to her tent.

Advisor Hu had also come back.

“Is it done?” Gu Jiao asked.

“All taken care of.” Advisor Hu, entrusted with an important task for the first time in his years at the camp, had given it his all. His efficiency was impeccable.

Gu Jiao weighed the coin pouch he handed over, didn’t bother counting, and simply fastened it to her waist.

Advisor Hu was overjoyed. My Lord trusted me! At last, I, Hu Yang, had a chance to rise!

“My Lord! My Lord! How did the talk with Wen Renchong go? Did he agree to return to the vanguard camp?” He asked eagerly.

“Not yet.” Gu Jiao answered.

Advisor Hu’s face darkened. “Why is he being so difficult?”

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don’t abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
