Roel’s initial plan was to coordinate with the reinforcements to perform a two-pronged assault from the inside and the outside to breach the deviants’ encirclement, but he knew it would have been impossible to pull that off without a proper channel of communication.
Whether it was him trying to break out of the encirclement or the reinforcements trying to tie down the deviants, it would be meaningless if they didn’t strike at the same time.
If Roel went out prematurely before the reinforcements arrived, he risked being crushed by the deviants. If the reinforcements arrived but he hadn’t come out yet, it would severely dampen the united army’s morale.
Grasping the right timing was the key to this battle.
Roel and Tark Stronghold’s commanders understood that, which was why Roel attempted to sense the mana pulsations at the landing point of his Silver Devourer, figuring that there would be intense mana pulsations if the united army had confronted the deviants in a battle.
He had never doubted that Nora and the others would come and rescue him.
In fact, the united army had even launched an all-out attack to save Roel, and they had already achieved a resounding victory at the entrance of Hawe Desert thanks to Lilian’s reinforcement. However, these happened too far away for Roel to sense, though he did sense something else: the Deviant Sovereign’s mana.
This told him that the Deviant Sovereign was camping in the area, waiting for his return. At the same time, the fact that he could sense the Deviant Sovereign’s mana meant that the latter had recently cast a spell, and this was likely induced by the arrival of reinforcements.
“Are they on their way?” Prince Kane asked.
“It requires further confirmation, but it’s likely to be the united army judging from the timing,” Roel replied.
“That’s good news, but it still won’t be easy for us to breach the encirclement of the Deviant Sovereign and the deviants’ three Race Sovereigns with our current forces.”
“I reckon that we’re the weakest one of the three forces on this battlefield, so we have to patiently bide our time. Nevertheless, it’s almost about time for us to make our move.”
Prince Kane nodded. The other commanders gathered in the command center fell into a state of tension, knowing that they would soon have to fight a dogged battle.
The upcoming battle would decide not only their own survival but the fate of humankind as well. Its significance was immense, which was why Tark Stronghold had made thorough preparations. Within half a day’s time, the soldiers were already standing at attention in the fortress’s square in neat formations.
Be they footsoldier or knight, every single soldier gathered here had a solemn expression. They had learned about their current situation from the fortress’s broadcast, and they understood the difficulties they would face upon returning to the real world. Even so, they remained resolute.
They couldn’t change the fact that Shrouding Fog had stolen two years away from them, but the upcoming battle was a chance for them to prove themselves.
After holding one last meeting, the military commanders rushed off to do their final preparations after receiving their orders. Meanwhile, Roel and Wilhelmina stood at Tark Stronghold’s main entrance, awaiting the arrival of the opportune moment.
“It’s our second battle. Mina, are you afraid?”
“Are you talking about the Deviant Sovereign?”
“Mmhm.”
“A little…” Wilhelmina looked at the white scenery in the distance as she replied.
Roel wasn’t surprised. He, too, was unable to remain composed when he thought about the monster he would have to face outside.
“You admitted to that quite easily. I thought that you would put on a brave front.”
“My fear won’t disappear just because I turn my eyes away from it. I might as well confront it lest it shake me up on the battlefield.”
