ESSENCE OF A PARENT

“Riveria’s really grown as a mother these past few years.”

“…Must you keep saying that, Loki? Do not try my patience.”

“Ha-ha-ha! The fact you no longer deny the matter so harshly means there must be some grain of truth to it!”

Loki, Riveria, and Gareth were gathered in the familia study, enjoying a pleasant conversation on a sunny afternoon. Currently, the conversation centered around Riveria, who had been recalling stories from Aiz’s childhood as of late.

“Ya must be feelin’ lonely now that you don’t have to take care of her no more!”

“Perish the thought. What I want for the child more than anything is for her to grow up healthy and be happy.”

“Hmph! You may say that, but we all know very well that you’ll change your tune once she finds herself a man!”

“Gareth, you loon! I’ll let no two-bit, stinkin’ man lay his hands on my little angel! She’s gonna live here with me in peace and happiness forever!”

“Now why are you getting angry…?”

Loki panted and panted, before turning her attention back to the important matter—making fun of Riveria. “But I see what you mean,” she said. “If Aiz really did get a boyfriend—and I ain’t sayin’ she will—I bet Riveria here wouldn’t shut up about him! She’d be like, ‘You think you’re worthy of my daughter?!’ Hee-hee-hee!”

“Well, of course I would.”

All of a sudden, Riveria’s tone completely changed.

“Any potential suitor must be thoroughly vetted by me personally. I won’t stand for any mangy hound dragged in off the street, you know. Oh, no. He must be an intellectual and dignified, too. Not to elf standards, of course. I’m not a tyrant, but he must have a modicum of sense and decorum. Any less would be simply unacceptable, I’m afraid. Next, while I know this sounds strict, he should be capable enough to protect Aiz should the need ever arise. Put simply, he should be strong enough to defeat me—or so I would have said if I were several centuries younger. Unfortunately, such practices have fallen out of vogue recently, but at the very least, he must be Aiz’s equal. As for race, well, let’s leave that up to her. As long as he’s someone Aiz truly loves, then I’ll accept anyone—yes, even a dwarf. However, if a god gets involved with her, then I’m afraid I’ll have to step in. Aiz is deeply connected to the spirits, and I refuse to have anyone come barging into her life only to dredge up old wounds and…”

…Aw crap, she isn’t just her momma—she’s her daddy, too!

Elves are such a bothersome bunch…

Loki and Gareth both wore vacant stares as there was no end in sight to Riveria’s tirade.
