A DOG’S PAYBACK?

“Tch. Still not enough, huh?”

“This stuff ain’t easy to find…”

Bete and Loki roamed the sunlit streets of Orario, trying to gather enough antivenin for their colleagues on the eighteenth floor, but it was harder than expected. The poison vermis was only found on the lower levels, and even then, it was not particularly common. Outside of Irregular occurrences, like the mass spawn Loki Familia ran into, the creatures were rather rare, and by extension, so were their drop items.

“We’ve checked every store that might have ’em,” growled Bete. “All that’s left is to hope the other familias have some stock they’re willin’ to trade…”

“As if it’s gonna be that easy.” Loki sighed. “They’ll take one look at the mess we’re in and make us pay through the nose—if they let us have ’em at all.”

There was no shortage of rivals and resentful adventurers who had it in for one of the city’s most powerful familias. Word would have spread that Loki’s children were looking for antivenin, and anyone with inventory was probably drooling at the thought of the high prices they could charge. Of course, money was no object when it came to her familia’s safety, but negotiations were going to take a great deal of time, which was something currently in very short supply.

Bete clicked his tongue a second time as he thought about what troubles awaited.

“If only there was someone who would cut us a deal and put in a good word to the other familias and merchants as well…” Loki mused.

The ears on the top of Bete’s head twitched.

“Loki,” he said. “Go back to the manor. Call everybody and get the shit together.”

“Oh? You think of somethin’?”

“Just go,” barked Bete as he headed off by himself to another part of the city.

“Erk. Vanargand?”

Lulune winced when she saw who had just barged into the Hermes Familia home. Bete explained the situation and ordered her to gather up every vial of antivenin she had.

“Don’t forget how we saved all your asses on the twenty-fourth floor,” he said.

“I-I know, but still…!” the chienthrope girl whined. “Neither Lord Hermes nor Asfi are here right now, so we can’t just give them to you!”

As the argument played out in the entrance hall, a prum girl and weretiger man watched on from a safe distance.

“Keep talkin’, and I’ll tell the Guild about how you fudge your levels,” Bete growled.

“Th-that’s not fair!”

In the end, Lulune had no choice but to comply with Bete’s demands, landing her in hot water when Hermes and Asfi eventually returned.
