Interlude: Rosell’s Postscript

My name is Rosell Kischa, and I’m the son of a hunter. I never thought I’d be anything more until I met Ars, the son of a local nobleman, and my life changed dramatically. Suddenly, I was going over to Ars’s estate day after day, just to study. He told me that I had talent when he invited me over for the first time, and I’m still not really sure what he meant by that, but I actually enjoyed studying quite a bit and didn’t mind playing along.

Ars is around the same age as me, but we’re worlds apart in terms of maturity. Why, Ars is practically an adult. He isn’t a scaredy-cat like me, and the way he talks sounds real adult-like somehow, too. He also has the power to see other people’s strong points, which makes Mister Rietz and the other adults really respect him.

I think Ars’s power is amazing, too, but I’m also a little scared by it. What if he can actually see more than just people’s strong points? What if he can see all of the secrets I keep stowed away deep within my heart? What if he knows that I’ve been secretly taking his books back home with me to read after our study sessions end…?

I would spend all of my time reading if I could, but books are far too precious to lend out to a child like me. Taking them in secret is my only choice. I don’t actually have any other secrets, but if Ars can read my mind, then that one secret is enough to get me in serious trouble.

There’s only one thing to do─I have to learn as much as I can about Ars’s power! And the quickest way to go about that is to ask him directly.

“My power lets me see people’s talents, names, and sex,” Ars explains without a second’s hesitation. “It doesn’t let me read minds or anything like that.”

“Oh, okay,” I reply, immediately relieved. It’s still an incredible power, but I guess it’s not incredible in that sort of way.

“If you’re worried about the books you’ve been smuggling home, I already know all about it. I didn’t have to read your mind to figure that out,” he continues.

“Eek!”

“Don’t worry, I don’t mind at all! I just hope you’ll tell me before you borrow them in the future. It’s only polite.”

I feel hesitant, but ask, “So if I ask to borrow books, you’ll actually let me?”

“Yes, of course,” replies Ars.

“Th-Thank you! I’ll be sure to ask you next time, I promise!”

And so, I’ve received formal permission to borrow Ars’s books. He really is a good guy. He lets me read his books, and he’s taught me all sorts of things, so I’m starting to grow quite fond of him. I even kind of hope that I’ll be able to repay him for everything he’s done for me.

Ars says I can become an incredible tactician someday. I’m still not convinced, but maybe I’ll focus on studying to prove him right.
