When Alex left in search of Death, he hadn't realized just how close he was to the core region. He could see the start of the land covered in red sand just at the edge of the horizon.
Beyond that, there was a strong haze that made things almost impossible to see through, like a strong desert mirage that hid everything beyond it.
He had half a thought to go check out the core region, but first he needed to find Death.
It took Alex half a day to locate Death. She had made it easy for him by leaving a trail of corpses for him to follow. She was slow in moving through the desert, simply walking at her own pace, allowing him to catch up even after searching for her in all directions.
Alex stayed far enough away, simply keeping an eye on her at the moment.
Whisker came out too, flying next to Alex high in the sky like a speck of dirt against the shimmering sky.
Death moved straight ahead, never veering too far off the line. Her path wasn't perfectly straight in the long run, but that change wasn't something she decided on.
Death walked listlessly through the desert, never stopping to take a rest. Day or night, she continued on at her own pace, no matter what. Even if she was caught in a sandstorm, she didn't stop.
Alex followed her for days, letting Whisker gather all the beast corpses into his Soul Space. When it was close to full, he had Whisker bring it all out so he could absorb all the Blood Aura from it.
He continued following Death to learn more about her.
It was nearly 4 days later when Alex first noticed Death make any big changes to where she was going. She stopped for just a moment before walking slightly off to the left, heading in a random part of the desert.
Alex wondered why that was. What had caused her to suddenly make changes to her path?
Death had to have changed her direction to go somewhere specific, so he continued following her. Then, a few days later, she changed her direction once again.
Alex still followed her, wondering where she was going. When she switched her direction for the third time a few days later, without ever actually arriving somewhere, he changed his mind.
This time, Alex tried to find out where she would have gone, had she not changed her direction.
He flew straight ahead in that direction, hoping to see something up ahead that would give him some answer.
However, before he could move on, the world spun in his vision as he fell from the sky. Even as he died, Alex could not believe that he had been killed at such a distance.
Alex had been high enough that when he regenerated, he was still in the middle of falling. He immediately turned invisible and tried to escape out of Death's range, but she located him instantly and cut him down.
Her attacks seemed to transcend space and time as they landed on him before he could do anything.
Once again, Alex began dying at the hands of Death, again and again.
