All of us couldn’t help looking at Dorothy with a strange look when she said this.
The way that she said this was too firm, as if she was certain that this was the case.
Only how would she be certain of this...
From what we had asked about her from the other prisoners, she had always been in that prison. She had been there longer than even the prisoner that had been there the second longest.
It was almost as if she had been born in that prison...
None of them had ever heard of her parents before, so they just assumed that she had been kidnapped as a child or something.
But now it seemed like there was more to it.
Seeing that we all looked at her like this, Dorothy just said, "As far as I could remember, I never had parents. From the ones that died before we were saved, they told me that my parents had given birth to me in that place and they died soon after."
We had never actually asked her this since we didn’t want to bring up trauma for her, but now she was saying it as if she didn’t seem to care at all.
No, it wasn’t that she didn’t care at all...
It was just that she really couldn’t form a connection with someone that she had never met before.
Even if she was an intelligent child, it wasn’t as if she was able to remember things from when she was a baby.
So it seemed that the only thing that she could actually feel for was the concept of parents and not her actual parents.
There was only silence that followed after Dorothy said this, but it didn’t seem like she was surprised.
It seemed like she was already used to this reaction from people.
She had been trapped in a place where people kept coming and going, so there was no doubt that people should have asked her this question before. It seemed that she had dulled herself because of all the times that she had been asked this question before.
Even if she said it again, she wouldn’t be hurt anymore...
But that just made things even more sad.
"Then how about letting us adopt you?"
I was completely caught off guard when Rose suddenly said this.
Dorothy was also caught off guard judging by the look on her face as she didn’t expect Rose to suddenly say something like this. However, there was a guarded look that appeared on her face when she heard this.
Even if there was a part of her that did want parents, it wasn’t as if she would give up everyone and jump at this chance.
There was no telling what they wanted from her.
At the same time, there was no telling what they would do to her.
The look in her eyes, this was a child that had been hurt before and not just once.
That wasn’t strange considering the way she had lived and the place that she lived in until now.
But Rose didn’t propose this at a whim.
"We’re the only ones that will be able to keep you." She said even though she could see the wary look that was on Dorothy’s face.
In fact, she had even said this as if she was provoking Dorothy.
It didn’t seem like she was sincere about taking Dorothy in, but that was actually the opposite.
Rose wasn’t wasting any time with words, she was directly using facts to convince Dorothy.
When she saw the way that Dorothy’s expression relaxed a bit, she grabbed me and pulled me over to her side to say, "He’s the only one that can guarantee your freedom right now. If you try to go anywhere else, there will be those that will try to lock you up."
An ugly expression appeared on Dorothy’s face when she heard this, but she didn’t deny it.
Even if she was a child, she was a smart child.
She knew what the others thought about her and how they treated her, so that was why she had clung to me in the first place. She knew that if it wasn’t for me, then it would have been likely that they would have already done something.
I didn’t stop Rose as she said this since I knew that she had a plan.
I just hoped that she took it easy on Dorothy.
After a moment of silence, Dorothy said, "Do you think that I don’t know this?"
Rose didn’t seem to mind the bitter tone that was in Dorothy’s voice as she said this as she suddenly moved forward.
Dorothy couldn’t help taking a step back when she saw Rose approaching her like this, but then she stopped and waited to see what Rose was about to do.
After Rose came forward, she raised her arms and said, "I know that you’re afraid, but why not take advantage of us? We’ll be able to protect you until you grow up and then you can go wherever you want. There’s no need to hold back, use us however you want."
This certainly wasn’t something that a normal person would say, but this was the right way to convince Dorothy.
Even if she didn’t show it, she was someone that was quite distrustful of others.
It was only towards those that she felt that she could use that she would open herself a bit. But even then, it wasn’t as if she would open herself completely to them since she had been hurt before.
But now...
"Don’t say that..." Dorothy said in a weak voice, almost as if she was trying to convince herself at the same time.
Rose just revealed a faint smile as she stepped forward towards Dorothy with her arms wide open still.
After a moment, she stopped in front of Dorothy and took her in her arms.
This time, Dorothy didn’t resist.
"Silly child, it’s fine to rely on adults sometimes." Rose said while patting her on the head.
