CHAPTER 1 STORY 43
A Story of the Country of Stories
“A-alert! Aleeert!”
A man’s loud shouting echoed out of a certain house in the Peaceful Country of Robetta.
The birds that had been settled in a nearby tree flew off in surprise, and a housewife who happened to be passing by giggled and said, “Oh my goodness, not again?”
Inside the house, the man’s wife let out a sigh. “Looks like it’s happening again.”
The reason for the man’s panic was always the same.
“Alert! Alert! We got a delivery from Elaina!”
Every time any kind of package arrived from his beloved daughter, who was off traveling the world, the man kicked up a big fuss, as if a natural disaster had occurred.
His wife always smiled in amusement at him and said, “You’ve never been able to let go, no matter how much time passes, have you?”
But recently, his behavior had become a source of worry for her. “That’s enough. Aren’t you used to this by now? After all, it’s normal to get mail when someone’s out traveling, dear. You’re making too much fuss.”
“The fact that mail has shown up is proof that Elaina is getting along well. Isn’t that wonderful…?!”
The man had been awfully worried, practically beside himself, really, especially since there hadn’t been any letters recently.
His wife let out a sigh. “She’s getting along well, even if you don’t worry over her. The fact that there was a break in the letters just proves she’s been enjoying her travels. That girl will be just fine, whether she’s sending us tidings or not.”
As she said that, the woman looked at the package that had arrived from her daughter—the package the man was holding so preciously. The package, large enough that he was holding it in both arms, was obviously quite heavy.
“You’re always so calm.”
With a smile, the man set the package down on the table.
It was misleading to say the woman was always calm.
“I just have confidence in the girl. I also get flustered, when it’s warranted.”
For example, when she saw strange black creatures in the kitchen. For example, when she saw a ghost. For example, when books full of embarrassing anecdotes that she had written long ago appeared unexpectedly.
She was often told she was always calm, but she was a totally normal woman, who got flustered in situations like those.
That said, it had been a long time since she had seen any black creatures in the kitchen, and she hadn’t run into any ghosts lately. Nothing had been happening to get her flustered, so her husband certainly might think that she was always calm.
“Well then, okay, I wonder what Elaina sent us this time?”
The man hummed to himself as he opened the package.
Inside were several booklets, about ten of them.
“Hmm…? What do we have here? Books…?” The man picked up one of the volumes that was inside and ran his fingers over the cover.
From the side, the woman peeked at the cover.
Written on it was—
The Story of the Country of Stories
“Ah!”
They were books full of embarrassing content the woman had written on her travels long ago.
And the woman was, understandably, flustered.
[Publication Information] Volume 14
Melonbooks Buyer’s Bonus
[Author Comments]
I had originally planned to include this bonus story in Volume 14 of Wandering Witch, but it wasn’t that great of a fit, and it was kind of off-topic for the volume, and there was nowhere to put it, so it ended up in the bonus stories volume. At that point, we had already decided that Volume 15 was going to be a bonus stories volume, so you could also say I made a bold decision to relocate it.
