CHAPTER 1 STORY 42
A Certain Country’s Specialty
In a country where they sold certain famous products, a man and a woman were arguing in the street.
When I listened in on my way past, I could hear that they were apparently fighting over a very trivial topic.
“What did you just say was the most delicious food in this country? I can tell you it’s the bread, of course!”
“Oh, no, it’s the hamburg steaks! Though I don’t suppose you’d understand that, with your soft, spongy face like well-proofed bread dough!”
“Why, you, what did you say?!”
Two popular shops sat side by side along the main avenue.
One was a butcher shop famous for its hamburg steaks, and the other was a bakery famous for its fluffy bread, and both of them were fighting over whose dishes were more delicious.
“If that’s how you’re going to be, then why don’t we get that witch to decide for us what is better: my bread or your hamburg steaks?!”
“That’s a good idea! Although I know, of course, that my hamburg steaks are tastier!”
Their argument, as heated as a simmering hamburg steak, then dragged me, a neutral traveler, into the mix.
And I, the traveler who had been watching their exchange from a distance, tilted my head in confusion at this sudden development. “Huuuh…?” But the two shopkeepers didn’t care about the traveler’s wishes.
“Say, you there, traveler! My bread is delicious! Come try some,” the man said, holding out some bread.
“Say, you there, traveler! Everyone knows that hamburg steaks are delicious! Give mine a try!” The woman thrust some hamburger at me.
The traveler was very perplexed by the two of them.
Couldn’t they just skip all that and work together instead?
So the traveler took the bread and the hamburg steak that she had been handed and combined them to make a hamburger sandwich. She showed them they ought to consider not which one was the best but the fact that they could make something even better if they put them together.
The two of them were startled.
“Put the bread and the hamburger together…you say…?”
“I never thought of that…!”
The two of them looked at each other. Then they shook hands and made peace.
“Should we also work together, like the bread and the hamburg steak?”
“What a coincidence… I was just thinking the same thing…”
In this way, the two rivals who had been competing against each other got married, and the two of them merged their shops, and the country’s most famous food, the hamburger sandwich, was born.
“How do you like them, Miss Witch?! Our country’s famous hamburgers?”
I looked around the town as I was eating a hamburger sandwich that was as piping hot as the anecdote about the two shopkeepers in love. Now there were hamburger shops lining the streets everywhere.
“They give me indigestion.”

I had the idea of writing a story that had something to do with hamburg steaks down in the comments section, but I couldn’t come up with anything good off the cuff. Sure enough, it takes time to prepare for something like that. Yes, just like making hamburg steaks.
Hamburgeeeeeeeeeeeer!
