CHAPTER 1 STORY 38
A Scam Story
No matter where you are, if you walk down the street, there will always be someone doing something baffling. That held true for the country I visited that day as well, where someone was doing something very strange.
“…Oh-hoh-hoh. Oh-hoh-hoh-hoh!”
The person was a mage, sitting tucked away in a recess just off the street, laughing weakly. She was stroking her pointed hat, then putting it back on, stroking it and putting it back on, repeating these bizarre actions.
At first glance, it was obvious that she was a suspicious person.
By the way, who on earth was this mage repeating these incomprehensible actions?
……
Well, it was me, you know.
“Miss, exactly what are you doing over there?”
Apparently, my incomprehensible actions looked incredibly strange to the people who lived there. A man who had been wandering down the main avenue turned to stare at me, as if he was seeing something incredibly strange.
“Oh-hoh-hoh!” I laughed as I answered, “I’m making money.”
“Huh…? You can make money doing stuff like that? What on earth do you mean?”
What possible purpose could there be to repeatedly stroking and putting on my hat? The man seemed to find it extremely strange, but even so, at the same time, he seemed curious.
“Would you be so kind as to teach me the details?” he asked.
My, my…
“Of course, there’s no way I can teach you an incredible way of making money like this for free.”
“Oh… Well then, how much do I have to pay to get you to teach me?”
“Let me see—how about two copper coins?”
That’s exactly what it costs for a night at a cheap inn nearby.
“Is that really enough? Sounds good to me.” The man nodded and dropped two copper coins into my hand with a clink.
“Pleasure doing business with you. Oh-hoh-hoh!” I smiled boldly again and then told him, “Making money this way is extremely simple.”
“Is it? To me, it just looks like you’re doing some pointless nonsense…”
Really now, how can you say such a thing?
“Well, if you sit here and do something confusing, sooner or later someone will come up and talk to you, right? I tell the people who come up to talk to me that I’m making money. And when I do, they ask me again how I’m able to make money doing these incomprehensible things, right?”
Just like what’s happening now.
“And so I answer that I’ll teach them how, if they give me a couple of copper coins.”
“…And then what?”
Oh my, you’re not too quick, are you?
“I turn a profit.”

Usually, Elaina sits by the roadside conducting her strange business and ends up being forced by a soldier to pay a penalty or something, but I bet her schemes usually go something like this, so that’s what the story’s about. Making something out of nothing. She’s a real moneymaker, isn’t she…?
