CHAPTER 1 STORY 34
A Story About a Psychological Test
I was in a café, eating a meal with Saya.
Saya looked at me, wearing a somewhat proud expression, and then asked, “Elaina, do you know about this kind of psychological test?”
“Never heard of it,” I immediately replied.
“But I haven’t even told you anything about it yet.”
“Generally, I don’t have any use for that sort of frivolous speculation.”
“I think that’s biased, though…” Saya frowned. She seemed a little surprised by my dismissive attitude. “Anyway, in the psychological test, they ask you something like this: ‘You have some bread sitting before you. Now, how many pieces are there?’”
“That’s an incredibly vague psychological test…”
Psychological tests usually didn’t have a correct answer set up from the start; they were like a game where you surmised things about the other person based on their answers to the questions.
Well, roughly speaking, to put it simply, that means I can just answer without having to think too hard about it.
How many pieces of bread are in front of me, huh?
“There are two pieces,” I said as I looked at the bread that was sitting on the table.
There were exactly two. In short, all I had to do was answer according to what I saw.
“Oh…is that what you think?”
“Heh-heh-heh.” Saya put on a bold smile. It looked a little triumphant. “By the way, Elaina, did you know? Supposedly, the number of pieces of bread in this question tells you the number of people you’re interested in at the moment.”
“I see.” I nodded as I chewed away, eating both pieces of bread at once.
I saw what was going on.
In short, Saya had come up with a scheme to kill time by teasing me.
“Elaina, who are you interested in right now?”
That’s what’s going on, right? Right, I knew it.
“By the way, Saya, have you ever heard this fact before?”
“Nope,” she answered immediately.
“Didn’t think so.”
Generally, I don’t have any use for that sort of frivolous speculation.
But then, given how Saya was acting at the moment, it was probably precisely because she didn’t know that she had challenged me to the psychological test.
I said—
Wearing a somewhat triumphant smile, I said—
“Psychological tests are something you only give to people you’re interested in.”

This was a story about Elaina teasing Saya by asking “Is it possible that you like me?” before Saya could tease her by asking “Who do you like right now?”
Elaina said this in the punchline, too, but psychological tests aren’t something you give to someone unless you’re already interested, right?
I think “get them before they get you” is a very Elaina-like stance to take.
