CHAPTER 1 STORY 30
Miss Fran’s Culinary Awakening
My journey with my teacher was continuing as always.
“Elaina, guess what? To tell you the truth, I’ve recently learned to cook.”
One evening in the midst of our travels, while we were staying at an inn in a certain country, my teacher suddenly came out with this incomprehensible statement.
My teacher had learned to cook.
After digesting those words in my head, I spit out my reply. “…What are you talking about?”
“As you might imagine, I felt embarrassed about the fact that I couldn’t prepare even a single dish, even at my age, and I decided I should learn the skills to live a more serious and respectable life. So I took up cooking.”
I had thought it was unusual to see her standing in the kitchen, so that must have been it.
“In other words, we’re eating your cooking today?”
“Well, that’s what it comes down to, yes.”
“…………………………………………Is that…so…?”
“Why are you making a face like it’s the end of the world?”
“It just brought back painful memories of my training days…”
I had a faraway look in my eyes. Once, during my training days, when I was spending every day diligently improving my magic, I had carelessly eaten some of my teacher’s cooking and had found myself confined to my bed for several days. Because of that experience, I was very suspicious toward anything she claimed to have cooked, and furthermore, at the time, I had vowed never to let her cook again and had done everything I could so that all she did was wash the dishes. And so the moment words like cooking came from my teacher’s mouth, the only thing I could imagine was the end of the world.
“Miss, you shouldn’t force yourself to work too hard…”
“Elaina, there’s no need to worry. I may look young, but I am an adult. Naturally, I have a good understanding of my own cooking abilities. I made sure to try to start with something simple, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Uh, try to start…? What do you mean by that? Are you saying today is your first try?”
“It certainly is, oh-hoh-hoh!” My teacher laughed.
“Please stop this, Miss. People will die.”
“Well! What a cruel thing to say,” my teacher said with exaggerated surprise, then picked up one of the kitchen knives. “You just watch, Elaina. I’ll show you how I’ve improved.”
Then my teacher began to cook.
And several minutes later—
“……” I was looking down at the food my teacher had prepared. “Miss, what is this?”
“Sandwiches.”
But they were the same sandwiches the two of us had bought at the shop. The act of cooking my teacher had spoken of was simply cutting the sandwiches.
“That was less cooking and more just cutting with a knife, don’t you think?”
“Well, it’s not like I’m going to get good at it right away, is it? I’ve got to start with the simple things so that I can diligently improve my skills day after day.”
Then my teacher smiled again. “Just like you during your training.”

I, too, practiced all sorts of skills when I thought for a while that I might become an expert cook. By the way, this is kind of off-topic, but in RPGs and other games, there are often weapons and items that you can’t equip because of your level or the cost, aren’t there? For me, all the different cooking utensils were basically the same as those items. Even if I bought some equipment that I could afford, my level was too low, and I couldn’t make use of it. Darn.
