CHAPTER 1 STORY 27

Hot and Cold Elaina

“So I have a theory. I think you might actually like me, Elaina.”

Saya lobbed these nonsensical words at me all of a sudden, so I paused my reading and gave her an incredibly vague reply. “Uh-huh… Is that…so?”

“Apparently, there’s this concept called ‘hot and cold’ in the world, Elaina.”

“Hot and cold?”

Well now, what on earth could that be?

According to Saya—

“The idea of hot and cold describes a person who likes someone and can’t be honest about their feelings, so they say the exact opposite of what’s in their heart.”

“Huh…” At that point, I finally raised my head. “So exactly what does that ‘hot and cold’ thing have to do with me?”

“Because, Elaina, I love you, but you ignore me, right?”

“I do.”

“And yet I’ve never seen you take a liking to anyone else before.”

“That’s right, you haven’t.”

“You see? So basically, that makes you hot and cold, right?”

“I think you’re totally off base…”

“I thought you might say that, so I prepared a little display for the occasion. Take a look at this, please.”

As she spoke, Saya somehow pulled a huge sheet of paper out from somewhere and stuck it up on the wall.

“Here you can see that I’ve created a visual representation of your usual behavior, Elaina.”

“Have you got too much time on your hands?”

“No, I’m very busy researching you.”

“I’m sorry, I asked the wrong question. Are you a stalker?”

“Yes.”

“I wish you had denied it…”

“Anyway, will you take a look at the results of my research?”

Smoothly warding off my disdainful look, Saya continued, “These are all the responses I’ve gotten when I confess my love to you, Elaina. You can see that in ninety percent of the cases, I was rejected with ‘What are you talking about? I don’t get it.’”

“Sure.”

“By the way, for the remaining ten percent, you completely ignored me.”

“I see.”

“So here are the statistics on all the hot and cold girls worldwide. When someone confesses their love to them, they also indicate their rejection, at the same rate of ninety percent, by saying, ‘Wh-what a stupid thing for you to say! Well, if you’re going to say it anyway…um, I guess I can’t…not go out with you, I suppose.’”

“Wait, that’s not a rejection, though, is it?”

“When they get to the second half, some convenient noise or something always interferes, and ultimately the other party only hears the ‘Wh-what a stupid thing to say?!’ part, so in the end the result can be considered the same as a rejection.”

“Huh…”

“By the way, in the remaining ten percent of cases, they answer, ‘I…like you, too.’”

“That’s not ‘hot and cold’ anymore. That’s not anything.”

“By the way, this reply always goes unheard by the other party for some reason or other, so it’s the same as getting ignored.”

“……”

“Anyway, as I’ve shown here, your behavior corresponds to that of the hot and cold type.”

“For the most part, the only thing that corresponds is the percentages, wouldn’t you say?”

“No way! Come on, really think about it, Elaina!” Saya pitched forward even more. Then she said, “As a matter of fact, with your typical hot and cold girl, the hot parts of what she says are often not heard by the other party. Because of that, she’s thought to be just a cold and prickly girl—those are the results I got from my statistics.”

“I waited too long to say this, but you’ve assembled some extremely stupid statistics, Saya.”

“Never mind that!” Now that she’d reached this point, there was no longer any stopping Saya’s momentum. She said, “Going by this theory, even if you did say something sweet, Elaina, there’s a high probability that I wouldn’t hear it!”

“Your theory is already ruined, though…”

“And so, given all that, Elaina, please show me affection.”

Sticking to her nonsense, Saya forced the conversation to a close, then put a hand to her ear and waited. “Come on, now…go right ahead,” she mumbled.

She seems to be expecting something, but…

I knew what I had to do.

“……”

And so, just like always, or maybe in a demonstration of the remaining ten percent of the statistical breakdown, I went back to my reading.

“Ah…I can just tell that Elaina is answering me with ‘I love you, too’…”

Saya, by the way, was thrilled.
