CHAPTER 1 STORY 20
Avelia’s Secret
“I’m back!”
My older sister and I were still in the middle of our journey.
We spent our days traveling from country to country, earning our daily wages.
“Welcome home.”
My sister, who had already gotten home, greeted me by waving her hand in the air. I walked right past her as she enjoyed a cup of tea, and collapsed with a fwump on the bed.
I was obviously exhausted, but my sister cocked her head and looked down at me. “How was work?” she asked.
“As you can see…”
“Exhausting, huh…?”
“How did your work go, Big Sister?”
“Just as you can see.”
With a bitter look, my sister slapped a bundle of well-worn recruitment magazines and let out a sigh.
My older sister, who was also my traveling companion, had started looking for a job like mine, where she could earn the money we needed. But for some reason, she had encountered a stroke of bad luck and was not presently employed.
“I just can’t manage to find a job…” My big sister let out a sigh. “Maybe they don’t want help from foreigners here in this country… There are no good jobs at all.”
“There are jobs out there if you’re not too picky.”
“Huh? I wonder…”
“It’s true.”
“Speaking of which, what was it that you’re doing for work, Avelia?”
“That’s a secret.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m not picky about what jobs I take.”
“Somehow, that’s got a little bit of a suspicious ring to it…,” my sister said as she narrowed her eyes. Then she let out a sigh and mumbled, “I wonder if I’ll also find a job right away if I stop being so picky…?”
Honestly, I would have preferred for my sister to stay in our room and not work at all, but given her personality, I knew that could never happen.
The fact that I had started my part-time job before she found anything had probably spurred on my sister’s feelings of guilt even more. And so she was frantically searching for work.
I wish we could both quickly find good jobs and escape these worries.
“Ah!” Suddenly, my sister raised her voice. “Hey, how about this cat café right here? I guess it’s a store where you can play with cats… Sounds interesting!”
Uh-oh.
“You can’t work there.”
“Oh? Why not?”
“It doesn’t matter why not. If I say you can’t, you can’t.”
Oh no, seriously.
I wish we could both quickly find good jobs and escape these worries.

There are jobs out there if you’re not too picky…! That’s this story. I like the conversations between Avelia and Amnesia because they’re easy to write.
