CHAPTER 1 STORY 8
The Harmful Results of Being Unable to Lie
“Elaina, Elaina, what do you think of me?”
“……”
This was the Country of Truth Tellers. An extremely annoying place, where no one was permitted to lie, or rather, no one was able to lie in the first place.
While there, I was having some difficulties.
“What do you think of me? But first, why have you been keeping quiet?”
For the last little while, Saya had been repeating the same question over and over again.
“……”
I had been staying quiet.
For a person whose words were full of lies (in short: me), the enchantment applied over this country did nothing but harm.
I’m sure the king of the country thought it would become a lovely, honest place because no one could lie, but sometimes, the thing called the truth can become more of a nuisance and more difficult to deal with than a lie.
After letting out a deep, deep sigh, I said, “Saya. Stop asking me that question. I don’t know how to answer.”
“Huuuh? Why would you have trouble answering? Tell me the reason, please, clearly and concisely, and specifically.”
“……”
I was in a bind.
I had no doubt I would suffer the consequences if I thought or acted carelessly in this country.
And that was why I was cautiously, cowardly keeping my mouth shut. Nevertheless, when it came to Saya, she was still hanging around me as always, and she kept on asking questions.
“Elaina. You know, for my part, that I trust you so much, Elaina. You’re more important to me than anybody else—”
“Hyah!”
I squeezed a piece of cloth into her mouth and wound it right around to the back of her head, where I tied it in a knot.
Now you can’t talk anymore.
“Whhrrdyumydsh?” She seemed to be trying to ask where I had bought the cloth.
“I knew your mouth would get you into trouble, so I bought it in secret a little while ago.”
“Sowwerbwebayed!” So well-prepared…she seemed to be trying to say.
“If you keep on saying things you shouldn’t, next time I’ll wrap your whole head up in cloth, so brace yourself for that.”
“Mww…”
That shut her up.
Then, after I could finally speak safely, I let out a single sigh of relief.
Since I wanted to be my usual lovely, honest self, and suffer no consequences, I didn’t want to say anything uncalled-for.
Or rather, there was no reason why I should have to go out of my way to say anything to validate her.
It wasn’t like I would be enjoying a sightseeing trip with a person I hated in the first place.
“……”
Well.
I could never say such a thing in front of her, no matter what.

[Author Comments]
This was a story about a country of honest people. Even Saya couldn’t possibly have thought that by showing no affection, Elaina was being incredibly affectionate.
I’m changing the subject here, but in the anime, Eihemia looked supercute, didn’t she? Shiraishi here really likes girls in glasses. So I also liked the levelheaded girls who appeared in the episode about Royal Celestelia. Also, I was surprised to hear that the voice actor for the prince was Katsuyuki Konishi. The prince was so cool…he was holding a super-lame sword, though.
