CHAPTER 1 STORY 5
A Story Worth Celebrating
That day, we arrived in a country that seemed to be having some sort of peculiar festival. The main avenue was decorated with showy arches and other ornaments, and the people manning the street stalls that lined the road were strangely excited.
It didn’t take much time before I realized they were apparently conducting some sort of celebration.
But, well…
“Um, excuse me?” I grabbed a girl who was walking down the street and tilted my head as I asked, “What exactly are you celebrating today?”
The girl’s eyes instantly lit up as she said, “Well! You must be a traveler, hm? Welcome to our country!” and grasped both of my hands, pumping them up and down. It was much too intense for a greeting.
After swinging my arms about for a while, she continued, “Today, you see, is the Anniversary of the Day When One Hundred Travelers Came to Our Country at Once! It must be fate that your journey brought you here on this very day!”
“Huh.”
“By the way, yesterday was the Anniversary of the Day When Our Country Quit Taking State Administration Seriously, and tomorrow is the Anniversary of the Day When the Number of Anniversary Days in Our Country Exceeded Three Hundred!”
Somehow, just hearing about those three occasions was more than enough for me to feel like I understood what kind of place this country was.
“By any chance, do you have these types of festivities all year round?”
“Of course! Every day is an anniversary day! …Except for the day after tomorrow, that is.”
“Which means the day after tomorrow, you take a break from the celebrations?”
“Not at all. The day after tomorrow is the one day when there’s nothing specific that we need to commemorate. So we can’t have a festival. And in our country, being unable to celebrate is akin to death… Ohhh, I start getting depressed about it two days in advance!”
And yet you seem to have an abundance of energy, so maybe it would be a good idea for you to look up the definition of depressed in the dictionary?
I mean…
“In that case, couldn’t you just have the Anniversary of the Day When There Was Nothing to Commemorate?”
“That’s brilliant!”
Her eyes opened wide, and she once again grasped both of my hands and pumped them up and down. As before, her response was much too intense.
In the coming days, the country’s cycle of anniversary days would be successfully completed, creating a wonderful place where every day was a celebration. Even now, as this wonderful country held festivals almost every day, they seemed to be entertaining their travelers and sightseers.
But what a happy country it must be, celebrating every day of the year!
Being able to hold a festival every day is certainly something worth celebrating.
