Afterword

I might be a pretty absent-minded person, but I still remember what my editor told me when I sent them my first story like it was yesterday. Apparently, they quite liked the way I ended it. The final sentence especially tied up the story nicely, I was told.

While I still don't know whether that's true or not, I have written all of my books believing that it is. What do you think? Did I nail the ending?

Anyway, yeah. That's the sort of story this became.

Death approaches!

Now, that part was obvious, but there also ended up being themes of boredom and staring at the far-away evening sun mixed in. I wonder, what it is about sunsets that makes me so nervous?

Maybe it's some sort of an evolutionary thing where human beings naturally get cautious as night time approaches? Yes, that makes sense.

Hello. Iruma Hitoma here. I wrote this book. Yes, the person whose name appears in the anime credits. Speaking of which, for the people who got in through the anime, I say nice to meet you. Oh, and this is completely unrelated, but they wrote my name as "hitomairuma" in the overseas release. I was so shocked when I saw that. I never knew they did first and last names like that over there.

I already felt honoured to be given an opportunity to write a special novel to be released alongside the anime, so imagine my reaction when I was told they wanted not just one, but a whole series of them.

"What should I write?!" I asked, to which they replied: "Write anything you'd like". That was exactly what I did. Now, as much as I enjoyed writing these stories, I must admit, I ended up going pretty far with them. How far into the future can you really travel when the final volume isn't even out yet? Oh, and in case you're wondering, the scenario presented in volume eight is the true ending of the series.

While the anime might have ended in a pretty good spot, the books are still ongoing, and so, if you're interested in what the future has in store for Adachi and Shimamura, then please, stick around. As for the people already familiar with the books, I highly recommend checking the anime out. It's quite the experience to relive a story with visuals and voice acting.

My current plan is to release the next volume by the end of this year. I haven't given much thought to how many there will be in total, but I would at least like to make it to volume twelve. My current record is eleven volumes in a single series, and so, it would be kinda cool to break it.

This series was originally only going to have three volumes. It is thanks to the continuous support of people like you that I have been able to write this many, and that I am still able to keep going with it. Seriously, thank you everyone. Reading your comments is what gives me the energy to keep on writing.

I'm sure that the people who worked on the anime feel the same way. If you liked it, then please, let them know. That said, I guess it might be a bit too late once this afterword actually comes out...
